It's a wonder I've never bit my lips off. I make a funny thing with my lips, kinda like when you play the clarinet(which I did hmmm...) getting better about it. That often corresponded with not breathing. Unfortunately no old pics of it, they're all at my brothers, sigh

This is a horse I had in college. The first shot is how he normally jumped but the second was a total "whoops!" This was taken probably 10 years ago so I don't remember what happened but it was pretty funny to see!

Before we evented, my main man and I did jumpers. With doing jumpers comes open water jumps, which he was terrified of. This picture is one where he stopped right in front of it, I booted, he sprung. Fun times.

Here's my "OMG I'm going to roll right on down the mountain" Face....

This jump scared me... and Fleck just jumped on over, but it was slightly downhill and at the top of the mountain, so it was a little scary!

And this one makes me giggle...

Five years ago, but my horse & I were at Pine Top going Novice. We were approaching a log a couple strides out of water, and Mr. Trey was too fixated on the water up until the last stride to realize what was going on...

Also, always thought this was funny. Kyle Carter coming out of the HOTL at WEG with his tongue out.

We dubbed this one "the carousel horse."

(We had a little disagreement about whether to move up and take a slightly long spot - my vote - or suck back, nearly refuse, and jump from practically on top of the thing - his vote. He won. Must've stuffed the ballot box. )

Most of my ridiculous moments are unfortunately not caught on camera.

I do, however, have a few somewhat awesome shots

First- This was at my first show with this horse. I hadn't really schooled much xc on him, and when we came to the water he decided he didn't really feel like jumping in! He did go in though!
    http://i956.photobucket.com/albums/a...at114554PM.png

Then, there's at the Buck clinic when he decided he DID NOT want to go near that bank. This was after about 10 minutes of struggle...including Buck standing behind us with a lunge whip, lol. This was a one time thing from him, btw...never before and never again. Strange horse, haha.
    http://i956.photobucket.com/albums/a...at114733PM.png

(The next series I feel guilty about, but I didn't buy the digital copies so they're proofed. I bought hard copies, so if you don't want to view copyrighted proofs just don't look and pretend it's not happening )

This was a series from a drop log to a half coffin on a tight bending line. The picture before this one my eyes are SQUEEZED shut...Then...(I look absolutely insane)
    http://i956.photobucket.com/albums/a...at115030PM.png

Then he starts to jump the first jump into the coffin and sees the ditch and this happens
    http://i956.photobucket.com/albums/a...at115051PM.png

    http://i956.photobucket.com/albums/a...at115103PM.png

    But he goes

This is during a clinic when Addie was definitely being a mare and decided it would be fun to do this:

    HA ha...

This picture instantly sprang to my mind when I saw this thread....

For those who have frequented Fair Hill HT forever and a day.... One of the older ways of going through the Prelim water was to jump down on the right side of the center ramp (if you're standing at the water with the warm up way behind you) and go down across the water 4-5 strides, and then up the bank and then 1-2 strides to an angled narrow face vertical, or you could swing wider to the right and jump two full panels of the vertical. Well on my good horse Willie I went the straight route. It didn't work out so well. (Fair Hill 1994)

    http://s103.photobucket.com/albums/m...ippoorwill.jpg

The video is better. Willie took the white square of the flag off the pole with his head!!!

    Meanwhile back at the ranch....

This isn't exactly what you're looking for from your final halt and salute.

    http://s103.photobucket.com/albums/m...=07LAD0449.jpg

To be fair though I had the whip with me, I only thought about using it.... and mostly on myself!! ( Plantation 2007)

What happens when you mix a "somewhat volatile and committed Xc machine" with a water jump drop that causes the helmet to fall over your eyes...on the way in.... preventing you from seeing anything???

    http://xctrygirl.tripod.com/emilyshi...nting/id4.html (Middle pic)

Simple she finds her own way out because she can recognize the flags... (Swear to God... that mare knew Green flags from black or red! Southern Pines 1993)

Ok final one.... over the years there have been many incarnations of the "Monkey Face"... Here's the latest.. (Plantation 2007)

Genie was a special mare and you really looked like you were having the time of your life with her Emily. I love the write up of her!

Thanks. Genie was very special. I still miss her.

I found my best.... "Oh Crap" Series....

How to sell a horse in under 10 steps...

Step 1: Compete horse with then professional photog bf shooting nice pics on xc

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/xctrygi...7602288023481/

Step 2: Try to explain to horse that second fence in a series of 2 spaced about 8 strides apart, is in fact identical to the fence you just cleared

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/xctrygi...7602288023481/

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/xctrygi...7602288023481/

Step 3: Get into fight with 2 stops at second fence

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/xctrygi...7602288023481/

Step 4: After whacking horse in punishment for 2nd refusal, get bucked off...

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/xctrygi...7602288023481/

Step 5: Remount, try to think of all the bad things the ASPCA will do to you and the sport as a whole if you do to horsey what you're fantasizing about

Step 6: Get horse in a good canter and stuff him over the 2nd fence, leaving no option for refusal without dismemberment on flags

Step 7: Post picture of horsey jumping the fence on his ad on Dreamhorse

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/xctrygi...7602288023481/

Step 8: Take money when first buyer calls and says "I have to have him" without riding or vetting!

I've got an old photo of my mare and I landing off a large oxer...with her eyes closed! That was before digital photography so when I picked up the photos at the store I was quite dismayed to see that my trusty steed was squeezing her eyes shut upon landing! Unfortunately, can't find that photo.

Gotta love a mid-air shot...on (well, off) my gelding, a few years ago.

LOL Emily! I love your horse selling story!

I don't have any good photos any more..... but I do have a framed photo my grandmother made for me- my first horse, a little QH mare, being a total butt in a flat class. I have this terrible expression of disgust on my face, mare is being, well, mare-ish, tossing head and hollow as all get out. It is a terrible pic, but my grandmother says, while presenting it to me proudly: "She looks so spirited here, I just loved it!"

Sigh. Of course I had to hang it up.

Ducking in from other forums for a moment. . .

This isn't a goofy rider expression, but I doubt it was Plan A at this fence, either. Angle is a bit weird, as I was a fair distance away and taking it with zoom. One of my favorite photos from WEG XC day. This horse did an absolute elevator jump - I think he could have cleared another 2 feet on top of this one. He was making SURE he cleared everything there.

    http://s276.photobucket.com/albums/k...t=DSC03534.jpg

Can anybody identify the horse? I tried to label all I could remember at the end of the day, but I failed on most of them other than a few big names as I was having trouble keeping track in something that isn't my home sport. AWESOME day, though. I had a blast.
