My young horse just qualified for Aiken's Show in the Woods that takes place in Hitchcock Woods the first weekend of April. How long before the show do I need to clip him so that he looks his best? He tends to be shiny immediately after clipping (dark bay that does not look the weird grey mousey color when clipped).
We allow a couple weeks, before competition. We do wash before clipping, and again after. Ours are usually in hard work, so they will be well sweated several times before the competion and hosed off to remove salt. The sweating opens pores, gets the oils going back into the skin for the shine. Time also allows a little regrowth, so hair just lays better looking for nicer color. One bay always turned bright ORANGE, the extra time did soften the color a bit.
