Default DH's First Ride on His Own Horse at Home!

David has his first ride at home with his horse, Rocky, this afternoon. What a blast the two of them had together!

David is still learning how to tack up properly, and Rocky goes in a Tom Thumb bit -- so there are a lot of moving parts on that bridle for a newbie! After trying it on the poor pony every-which-way-but-loose, and getting the bridle turned inside-out, I finally did have to help. But kudos to Rocky for standing perfectly still for -- oh -- 30 minutes or so? Rock is just soooo patient, and he soooo adores his dad!

They rode around our big "arena" (just a flat, mowed space in the field) at a walk and a trot, did some figure 8s, and just had a nice little intro ride.

Here are a couple of photos of my two handsome guys!

I am so proud of both of them. And Rocky has completely stolen my heart, because he takes such good care of my baby!

Yay for Mr KR and Rocky!
Very cute pair they make! Is that an Aussie saddle?

Heartwarming post, Ransom. Thanks! On the same token as a first ride, my DD legged up on my coming 3 y.o. filly today for an extended (well, 3 minutes or so) ride. No belly anymore, she's ready for the big-time!

Isn't it exciting to watch our horse and husband newbies learn the ropes??

Congratulations to the men in your life!

Thanks to everyone. Yes, it's a huge life change for David. And, he's loving every minute of it!

So am I, by the way. I really am the luckiest girl in the world!

Yes, MB, that is an Aussie saddle. It's Elijah's saddle, and amazingly, it fits little Rocky, too! It's also Eli's bridle, adjusted down to fit the Rock.

Thanks, Bluey -- Rocky is photogenic. He is just the cutest little horse I've ever seen. Not beautiful. But totally downright cute! And, what a find. Our trainer found him -- he'd been left out in a field for about six years. She bought him to "save" him. Rode him a bit, and said to me, "Jennifer, this is your husband's horse. He just doesn't know it yet."

Sure enough. They are a match made in heaven.

Ha! David must be good at those kinds of matches, eh?

    What a cute pair!

(I was also surprised there is no snow - I remember your posts your first winter on the place, when it sounded as if it wasn't that far from the north pole.)

Too cool...wish I could get my DH back on a horse! When we were dating,
he took lessons, jumped, etc, and etc. Had his own horse but they didn't
really click. He did with the first one, an old retired trail horse, but who had
to be put down after a year or two. Bought a gaited horse next time around
    but the relationship never gelled.

Excellent and congrats to your man! That is exactly what I had in mind for my DH. He didn't "get it" that my horse was too hot for him (and sometimes me) and took it the wrong way. I posted here about it and it turned into a major trainwreck...which we shouldn't revisit...
ANYHOO - this is what I want for my DH - a nice, sane horse...and the OP seems to have nailed it with her man!

Just wanted to add -- we kept Rocky at the trainer's for a month before we brought him home, and David took lessons twice a week. They really clicked, so David was very comfortable with Rocky before he came home. Yesterday was their first ride together here on the farm -- out in the great outdoors, without supervision. They are having a blast!

About the snow - yes, it's been a VERY mild start to the winter here. But I do remember last year when we had no snow until Christmas Day, and then got pelted with three blizzards back-to-back-to-back. So ... let's not tempt fate and comment too much about the lack of snow, okay?

Thanks guys - yes they are both cute as buttons. And also, another big round of kudos to my trainer for finding DH the perfect horse for him! (and selling him to us at a reasonable price!)

PS -- Rocky is only 14, so (hopefully) we will have many years of enjoyment with him!

BTW I love how David's vest, sweatershirt, gloves and jeans all match the colors in the saddle blanket too.

MB - THAT was a total coincidence! That's actually my saddle pad, I just loaned it to him. (It's a very very nice pad, too!)

Budrow -- sorry about the horse-too-hot for DH. I have two of those, one of whom also is sometimes too hot for me. Fortunately, DH has seen them both explode at various times and was confident he wanted no part of THAT!

    Awwww...
    KR: they look great together!

And IMO, Great Thinking having your trainer do the intro lessons for David.

When my DH got his first horse - who came with no turn signals & minimal brakes - I was his trainer.

I'm sure the folks we boarded with wondered what DH saw in "that bitch".
Think (if you are old enough):
    The Bickersons

Somehow we got through it & to be fair to us both, when Tom first got on a horse it was my trainer who showed him the basics.
And he had leased 2 well-trained horses before we got Buddy.
It all paid off - they are in my Profile pic

Wishing a long & happy relationship to your boys!

I'm so jealous! My husband, also named David, would love it too, I know, if I could just get him started. He's an outdoor guy who loves animals, but it's the cost of adding another equine that that keeps him from even considering it. I haven't given up, maybe if the right short-term lease came along... Have fun together!
