What product would you use for making a stable hood into a turnout hood?
So am going to pick up a couple of full hoods for my two horses. Thing is that they are stable hoods. Is there a good product to use on them to make them waterproof, or at least water resistant. So any certain products you guys like?
Silicone Water Guard @ Wal-Mart in the camping section. Hunters/campers use it on the tents to waterproof them. My mare is out 24/7 and I sprayed her cleaned turnout with it and so far so good. Even with the monsoons we have had.
I have a Big D hood that I use on my horse, it is very well made and the nylon is durable. That said, I think I would only use it in the stall, but around here 'turnout' consists of the horse being put in a small enclosure for a little while to stretch their legs as there is no pasture in sight. I think the decision of using it for turnout would depend on your situation and horses. I personally don't mind using a well fitted hood on a horse that I know will not pose a problem in a stall that has nothing to catch it on.
