    Default pedigree lingo

I see the phrase "sex balanced" a lot when folks are discussing pedigrees. What does it mean?

Take Lord for an example. It's very good when linebreeding to him or any other stallion to have a Lord son and a Lord daughter in the line.

Hypo : Landos / Acorado / Contender / Lord.......Here you have a Lord son in Landos and then the Lord daughter in the 4th. This is sex balanced line breeding to Lord.

    Hope that helps.

Works with mares also. If you think about the genetic lottery, the daughters will get their sire's x chromosome unchanged, while sons will not get it at all. so if you're trying to reproduce as much of the sire's genetics as you can, you need a daughter in the mix.

There's a theory that bringing in lines on the male side only for most stallions is not as powerful (and possibly detrimental) as bringing them in through both sons and daughters. Northern Dancer seems to be an exception to that rule, where you get the benefits (such as they are) from using only male line descendants.
