For fun - what colour do you think ... ? **Test Results are Back
Hi, I'm new to this forum...
I bought a nice filly from a local farmer and am not sure about the colour.
Out of interest, what would you say she is?
Her father is a palomino and her a mother is a grey (black base).
I'm not sure if these flickr photo links work?.......

Unless she is graying (and I don't see signs of that) she is a buckskin. Got one a similar color at home!

It's possible the OP is in South Africa (photos from Johannesburg Zoo in album) and that the pasture the photos were taken is not her pasture.
Rhode Islands are red;
North Hollands are blue.

Between the Zoo photos and the VERY dutch last name, there's a pretty good chance!
The pasture may not be the prettiest thing ever, but I'm sure that "ideal" pastures are regional, and depend on the person

Thank you for your input... Yes! I am in South Africa and that is not my pasture! I'm fetching her on Monday.
I bought her as just a general riding horse because her colour is unusual and rarely seen here, I'm hoping she is, and will stay, a buckskin.
The stallion is a mixture of "unknown" and a local breed "Boerperd" which has Andalusian origins.

Cool looking horses! Hope she stays buckskin.

Bucky, that horse, was actually a topic of discussion a while back here There were 2 camps - staying buckskin, or going gray. Most of us knew he was going gray.

I thought that page had younger/foal-ier pictures of him, but either I'm mis-remembering or the site has been re-done. I'll see if I can find some.

I have to agree with JB here, there is something in the coat that says "hey I'm going grey!". I would like to see a good head shot to really tell, as you can usually tell by the head. But there is something to the color that just looks grey to me. Greys can turn a bunch of funny colors as they change and horses that are do not have a dilute base tend to be more of the classic dapple and look grey, but ones I have seen that have been palomino or buckskin get a different color to them, sort of like a dark greyish brown color instead of the real dark then getting light color. Just my experience.

Absolutely not grulla. Grulla is dun on black, and this picture would show the very clear dorsal stripe that would be necessary for dun to be present.

[QUOTE=PaulaJane;5218551]Hi, I'm new to this forum...
I bought a nice filly from a local farmer and am not sure about the colour.
She's black based and I'm guessing a possible smoky black (black, non-agouti, cream) that is going gray (face shows signs of graying in the one photo where you can see profile). Other option would be a very sooty buckskin going gray.
Easy to find out...difference between smoky black and sooty buckskin would be an agouti gene ("Aa" or "AA") in a buckskin and none ("aa") in a smoky black.
Just thought of other possibility....seal brown or seal brown based buckskin (they don't seem to have a name for this color just yet)...either one going gray. Seal brown is a black based horse with a different form of the agouti gene (it tests "At") and it changes the distribution of black pigment to all over the horse but "thinner" than a black horse would have.....not the same thing as "sooty" or "smutty" characterisitics. "Brown" agouti is dominant over non-agouti and recessive to the "bay" form of agouti. Seal brown with a cream is often a very dark odd looking buckskin and seal brown without cream is just that, a darkish brown horse and the two can be difficult to tell apart. Since there's a cream dilute parent (the paly) the seal based buckskin is possible. As far as I know only one lab is doing the seal brown testing.... www.petdnaservicesaz.com and I'm not sure they are any longer...they quit doing all their other horse color testing about a year ago...don't know why. You could test for agouti (a seal will test "A" unless the additional test is done to determine "A" or "At") and for cream.
