Default What kind of bit is this?!

What kind of bit is this!? Local horse consignment shop - owner tried to convince me it was a very popular bit in the hunter world a few years ago. The mouthpiece is about five inches, if that gives you more perspective. It is a HUGE honkin' bit - i imagine one's cheekpieces would have to be very short - the upper shanks must come to close to a horse's eyes?

    Any ideas??

    HUNTERS?!? Ummm, No.

    SOME jumpers, maybe.

It's a big ol' leverage bit, serious power there, not a bit for uneducated hands.

That's an elevator. It's a jumper bit, not a hunter bit. Was very popular around mid-nineties.

But why the huge top shanks? Doesn't that reduce some of the power of the bit, since the ratio of top to bottom is not as large? I'd love to see a bit of this height on a horse's head- it just does not make sense to me.
