I need a stall mat- my horse has a run in stall and the floor was just clay/dirt. I only use shavings in the winter because he is rarely in it unless the weather is bad, are rarely urinates or poops in it.
But notf he seems to REALLY like his new grain (Ultium) and he wants to get every single morsel, so he is eating the dirt under the bucket and making a hole.
So I put down that crushed gravel that gets very, very hard, but it's so hard that I think he probably needs a stall mat now. Plus I suspect that he'll eventually start to consume some of it too.
I don't need a really expensive one because like I said, he's rarely in his stall, but I don't want to go too cheap. Any suggestions? I've looked on eBay and Craigslist for used, but can't find anything.
Depending on where you are located, you might check to see if there are any quarries near you. The quarry up the road from us gives away their old rubber conveyor belts. A few years ago, we got about 100' and used it to line an old milking barn with concrete floors to make two adequate foaling stalls.
Just be careful that you don't get ones that are too slick. We found that the old, cracked, worn out ones worked well.
Now I have real stall matts, and I waver between loving them and hating them.
