My 15yo OTTB has suddenly been going on/off his grain. He has always been a great grain eater. He currently eats beet pulp and Ultium which he has been on for about 2 years or so. Friday am he ate great/ friday pm wouldn't eat. Sat am ate great sat pm ate most. Sun am ate about 1/2 sun pm I left him in and all was gone by this am. Mon pm took about 2 hrs but finally ate everything. Anyone have any suggestions?? I have a call into the vet. He is grazing, eating all his hay, vital signs all normal, bright eyed and his coat has never looked so good. And yes I have tried different grains.....
We have a mare that sometimes goes off her grain if she eats something that she doesn't like the taste of - sometimes dewormer, sometimes a weed in the pasture that tastes funny - mainly the dewormer though. One time when she got dewormed, she didn't touch her grain for two days. We had to put lots of syrup in it to coax her to eat it again, then after that she was fine. Left a bad taste in her mouth, so to speak.
Ditto on ulcers. You might want to try rantinidine (see ratinidine threads...you can get OTC) for a few days to see if you see any improvement. If there is some improvement in appetite then you may want to talk with vet about ulcers.
Only horse I had go off grain was due to bugs in the grain. Some were dead some were about to hatch out. It came from the feed store like that. Bought new from a different feed store, he ate it right away.
