Daily wormer for foals...what is the paste of choice for fall/winter
My filly is on daily wormer, because the BO feeds it to all weanlings (I do not want it, but that is a whole different thread). I also question if she is really getting the correct amt., as they all get fed in buckets on the pasture fence.
ANWAY *sigh* focusing on what I can control here...I know you are supposed to worm with something after a deep freeze when they are on daily and again in the spring. What is it? I do not want to worm her with Quest, because she is a bit underweight from weaning stress and I'm not comfortable with it for her at this time (5 mos old).
She was previously wormed with a double dose of febendazole in July and Ivermectin the beginning of Sept. The daily was started the last week of Sept. I am looking to do something in Nov (planning ahead).
Yeah, it's not so much that the DW is forced, but the *dosage* is a BFD. Do you go out there every day? If so, can you just give the DW?
No. It is an 3 hr round trip and I cannot go daily. There will be times this winter when it is impossible as well. I found out about the daily after moving her there, but I really don't have another option until spring anyway. There are no suitable turnout friends for her where I board my riding horse and the only pasture with safe fencing (where she and mom lived pre-weaning) cannot be accessed during heavy snow (due to drift issues w/ buildings) and therefore doesn't even have water hooked up.
I could possibly show the BO a link or article on this. I know she is doing it because she believes it is the best thing for her foals (yes I get the incorrect dosing issue--but is there something 3rd party research I can share on it?). Our vets are very pro-daily wormer as well. We have had several resistance discussions...
Like I said, it's not so much an issue of giving the DW. For ascarids, it can be beneficial.
But the BO needs to understand the critical nature of getting the dosage correct. I'd bet you can educate her on that pretty quickly Liken it to the correct dosage of antibiotics - she'll understand that
And it *cannot* be skipped on a given day.
