[Iron Horse Farm]

Received a promising e-mail about a horse I have for sale. Followed up with a phone call. Got a seemingly very well versed previous horse owner on the phone. We were happily chatting bloodlines when it happened......

Me: pictures of her dam are also on the website

her: I'm looking at it now..........I thought you were Iron Spring Farms

Me: uh, no always been Iron Horse Farm. What do you think of her dam?

Her: oh, I wanted to buy a horse from Iron Spring Farm

Me: mmmm, ok, I was really starting to think that you and my mare would be a great match

Her: but I want to tell my friends that I bought a horse from Iron Springs.

When you sell to the public, that is what you get.
People will want your horses for all kinds of reasons.
That those reasons were because your horses supposedly come from a "name" breeder doesn't mean they may not give your horse the best care.

I have not been paying attention, don't go to the breeder's forum, but I too had assumed you were Iron Spring Farms, the name can be confused easily.

It is very common around here for those "name" breeders to have special sales and people pay double what that same horse would cost any place else, just so they can say they got one of those horses, even better if they have a very recognizable brand.
Seems to be part of the horse owning mystique for some groups of people.

On the other hand, if you had one of the horses of a big name breeder, say, as your best broodmare or stallion, you would be proud to advertise them as from that breeding and ride their marketing coattails.

I do think it was rude of her to say she didn't want your horse because it was not from xyz breeder.

Maybe you should raise your mare's price. Because WTF?!? Perhaps a larger check would satisfy this buyer. It reminds me of "But this one goes to 11"-- _Spinal Tap_.

Lol..that should top the charts from the thread that was on a little while ago "Things buyers have said/done to back out of a sale" or something along the lines of that. So sorry, but at least now your mare has a chance to find a home with someone who wants HER rather than just a brand name.

I have an acquantance that thinks she isn't getting "quality" if she isn't paying TOP dollar for everything. Horses, saddles, bridles, cars, trailers...

AND she likes to be able to say "Lily Pulitizer, Gucci, Hulsebos, Hermes, Mercedes, Premium Dutch". You get the picture...

It makes no sense to me, but I am one on the other crazy train that goes by the mantra "don't pay retail!" I love a shopping challenge! I also love a good horse no matter where they come from.

One of the great loves of my life was on his way to the killer! He was a great horse and I was proud to tell the world about the $300 horse! (Just like my great garage sale finds)!!!

It's all about priorities. Be happy that you found this out early and could send her packing.

You meet all kinds as a breeder. I had a laugh last fall, got a call out of the blue from a lady who says, 'so and so (mutual aqaintance) told me you may have some leopard appaloosas - I'm looking for a new horse and he said I should call you. '

We chat for awhile and I casually ask her why she is interested in a leopard appaloosa specifically. (she was quite adamant on it, which struck me as odd)

Her reply: I don't want to ride a brown horse like everyone else.
