Default Are all hydrants created equal?

We're having water run to our barn in a couple weeks (YAY!) but we need to get the hydrant ourselves. He said a 4' frost free hydrant was what we needed, but what kind was up to us. Any recommendations? What makes some better (and $$$) as opposed to a $40 one?

No. They are not equal, even within the same brand.

Pay the extra and get one of these. (period) It works easily for decades and if for some reason you need a single part, they are readily available.
Woodford Y-34 Make sure you get the Y-34 and not the W-34. The handle on the Y has much better mechanical advantage, which makes it easier to operate. We have some of both that are 30 years old.

They are sold by "bury depth" and not by total length.

Specify to the plumber that you want a galvanized street elbow at the bottom and NOT a PVC one and NO female threaded plastic adaptors anywhere in the system.
