There is a squirrel who has a taste for my tomatoes. He decimated them last year and lately has been coming back and raiding them this year as well. I have patio tomatoes, all grape/cherry size... last year I had 6 plants, this year I had 19, because I figured at least then he could get a couple and I'd still have some. d;

I tried putting ziploc bags over the ripening ones in the hopes that maybe he wouldn't notice them, and that worked for a while, but now he's figured it out and just rips off the baggies.

Since they're on our porch, I can't do any sort of elaborate netting or physical barrier really because it would block the rest of the patio.

My dog is scared of him.

Any ideas?

you can have my dog (min pin) She LOVES chasing squirrels! we live in a housing tract and a squirrel come over the fence to get our figs. Our dogs goes NUTS because she get can't it because it goes back over the fence too fast!

Own a corgi? Mine goes ape if anything small and furry (or feathery) comes into her yard. If my hubby notices one he open the door really slow.. points the corgi in the right direction and once she takes notice she's off like rocket barking the whole way lol.
But yes a pellet gun would work as well... otherwise I would think netting would be the only thing you really can do?

The easiest thing to do is to bring the full sized tomatoes into the house and put them in a brown paper bag on the counter or in a cabinet. Tomatoes ripen in the dark so the constant darkness just speeds things along as well as keep them safe. Either that or bird netting.

Fordtraktor Family Recipe for Squirrel Dumplings

1 squirrel, skinned and gutted (2 even better)
Cut squirrel into quarters
Flour well; fry quarters in lard or butter until brown
add carrots, celery, onion, water to cover; cook on low-medium heat until al dente
drop biscuit dough (any kind) on top in dollops; cook on low heat until dough is cooked through and meat is falling apart. stir and enjoy!

Tastes like rabbit.
