In the old folks thread, there was some talk about hunters of the past. Remind of us horses you remember, and who owned and rode them. If we stay on topic, and there is interest, we could have a nice, printable reminder of these special hunters. By all means, include your own!
Stocking Stuffer (August Busch), Super Flash (Mrs. Sylvester Johnson), Ruxton (Robrt Baskowitz), Just For Fun (Mrs. Haywood Nelms) and Weather Permittin (Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wheeler) were all shown by Charlie Weaver.

i remember reading the book on Beacon hill Stables (Madden & Cooney) and being entranced by a horse named Charge Account. i think the riders name was Topping. Then i came across some pics of the same horse in GMs Hunter Seat Eq book. I always think of that lovely horse when people talk about "true" hunter form!

When I worked in Wisconsin many years ago, Ellen VanDyke still had Ruxton! He was retired, living out his golden years in the field. She would periodically ride him in bareback and snuggle with him! LOL!

The ones that always come to mind for me are Not Always, Cap and Gown, Among the Stars, Up In Smoke, Gozzi, Aldie Belle, and a grey horse, I think whose name, I think was Second Fiddle.

All of the Spindletop horses were wonderful, and that restaurant was a destination for many of us during the week of the National Horse Show.

Now, this is entering a little into different territory, but I think Buddy Brown's Sandablaze was fantastic. Equitation winner, grand prix winner. Stylish, graceful, and expressive.

I saw Stocking Stuffer go at the Garden. He was fabulous. I remember his asking price being astronimical for that era (close to 100k)

Oh Harry, you do it every time. Loved Not Always, and Cap & Gown.. Mine would also be Captain Flash with Julie Kardon. Just liked watching him, he always appeared to be such a gentleman. In and out of the show ring.

OMG almost forgot, Betty Oare's Navy Commander. Was at Devon with millions of others when Ernie gave him to her as an engagement present. Why oh why, could I have not found someone like him??? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_confused.gif

Silk remember that also. It was so outrageous, no one thought he would sell. Silly us. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c.../icon_wink.gif

Silk, I also remember Stocking Stuffer when the Wheelers ame out to CA and showed at the Forum one year. He was simply breathtaking.

To add to the list, from the West Coast, I also loved Modest Man, Sporting Spirit, Noteworthy and Bavaria - all successful in the 4' division.

The book is called Hunter Seat Equitation, like the OP said...

Jenno Topping was Charge Account's rider. Fairly recent, but I've liked every photo I've ever seen of Scot To Do.

Charge Account was ridden by at least three riders who placed in the top three at the finals, Jenno Topping, Kristin Newman and Mia Wood. Night Life, another Beacon Hill horse, took Ruth Ann Bowers and Alice Debaney to high finishes. Magic Word from the west coast, trained by Karen Healy and ridden by Lauren Kay (?) is a third horse that I can remember earning top placings at the finals, as well as being extremely competitive in the hunters. Now, all the horses are specialists, with back ups!

Radio Talk - Maryann is still riding - she's now Maryann Charles. She's in Southern Pines, NC and still gallops to the jumps better than anyone!

    Edited for spelling...
