Default Has anyone had a root canal that failed??

So, around the first part of June, my tooth started to hurt a bit. It was a tooth that my Dentist had said would eventually need a Root Canal, and being pregnant, I decided to go on in, to let the Dentist check it on June 17th. He did an Xray (said it was safe during pregnancy) and said the tooth had an abscess. He did the root canal, and put me on Amoxicillian. I turned down the Vicaden prescription, and went on my merry little way. He said to come back in a few weeks so he could finish it.

That night the pain was horrible, and it only got worse. Finally when it was to the point of me crying, and throwing up all night from the pain, I went back in on the 22nd. he said the tooth was still draining, so he drilled some more, flushed it, and packed it with antibiotics etc. he also put me on a stronger antibiotic, and made me take the Vicaden (OB said it was fine) He said it may or may not help the pain, but I should probably see a specialist.

That night I was in the worst pain I have ever been in, besides my horrible labor. It was like a Migraine in the entire side of my face. I was taking Vicaden every 4 hours, but it wasn't touching it. Dentist said I was probably having a reaction to the stuff he packed it with. Rare, but does happen. Wonderful. So, as of now, the pain is a bit better, but I am still having to sleep with an ice pack. My gum, cheek jaw and ear all still hurt. The side of my eyelid is now numb.

I have an appt with an Endodontist on Tuesday. SO, has anyone had this happen??

    Should have gone there first...

Yes...I did have the same experience you did. The Endo found a root that the dentist missed. If I recall correctly, each tooth has 4 roots. I'm a freak and had 5. Dentist totally missed the 5th root. That root screamed bloody murder because it was left all by its lonesome (it was inflammed from all the drilling, etc.).

Don't know if this is the case with you...the Endo should be able to get you fixed up in a hurry. I'll never let a dentist do a root canal ever again.

My DH is a dentist and yes sometimes teeth have an extra root, you may be having a reaction to the packing, and being pregnant, well, that can tend to make us more aware of pain.

DH did a root canal on me and it kept hurting, he sent me to the endo and she found the tiniest part of root in a diff. location between teeth. The endo I went to has a microscope to look through while she works, DH's office doesn't as he isn't that specialized (ie endo, perio...), different tools for different professions. I am glad you got your appt for the endo and I hope you feel better.

Edited to say general dentists are perfectly capable of doing root canals. It's just that not everyone is textbook and if my DH looks at an x-ray and thinks there might even be the slightest problem, tooth or patient wise, he sends them out and won't start the work. He doesn't send that many out, and does do at least one a day, so I think that speaks well of his work.

Thanks for the feedback. I do really like my Dentist, and I don't blame him at all. he said that he had only ever had one other patient, other then me, react as badly to a Root Canal. Hopefully Tuesday's visit won't be so bad.

Oh yes, been there, done that!!! Worst pain imaginable - and I've passed 5 kidney stones. I was off work for an entire week because the pain was so debilitating. I spent my days with hot packs on my face and cramming down vicoden and ibuprofen 4x a day.

Started with an infected tooth. Went to dentist and he drilled into it right away - no antibiotics first, which is a MUST. I leapt off the chair and damned near passed out. He performed some more torturous acts on me until he said he had removed all the roots. He filled the tooth and sent me home. I then ended up in the ER with systemic infection. High fever, chills, vomitting, extreme pain in my head and jaw. I was on antibiotics but those take a few days to really start working. I ended up going back to the dentist every day to get shots to keep numbing the jaw while it healed. I was so sick I could hardly drive.

After a week of this, I made an apt. at an oral surgeon to have it extracted. They knocked me out, and when I woke up, the surgeon said that the dentist had only removed a partial piece of one root and that he packed the tooth and filled it on top of the exposed nerve.

I had residual pain for probably 2 months after that.

They can actually fail several years after treatment. I thought I had one (done 9 years ago) that was failing. X-rays showed nothing and thankfully a short course of antibiotics seemed to fix it.

There is no pain in the world like an abscessed tooth. And I have had a broken hip and hip replacement surgery. Narcotics do not work. I swear, the last time I had one I wanted someone to take a shotgun and blow off the left side of my face.

I'm glad I had my root canal before reading your posts! I can't even imagine the pain. Luckily I went to an endo for each one, which was good because I had 5 roots. The worst was my first one because it took 10 hours to complete, over multiple visits, and before my insurance kicked it. Pretty painful!
If I wanted to hear the pitter-patter of little feet, I'd put shoes on my cats.

How awful!! I hate going to the dentist but dutifully go 2x/year. I live in fear that I will get bad news and have to have some procedure done. Had a root canal 3 years ago that thankfully has been good. Had a crown done and when he put the crown on--he pushed down on it and he about had to peel me off the ceiling.
