Default Black on Black paint? Color Peeps Help!

My new pony is here! Someday I'll post a thread about idiots who buy horses over the Internets... But not yet.

My new Connemara X pony has a mom who was a registered paint. He is solid black, but has very distinct black on black paint type markings. Can't post a picture here... But he's basically 2 toned black on his neck and looks kind of like a map.

Is there a name for this coloring?

You need to find a way to give us a picture of this!
Disclaimer: My mom told me that people might look at my name and think I had an addiction other than horses. I don't; his name was Bravado.

I wonder if you shaved one of the borders of the color "change" if you'd find black skin under one side and white skin under the other? Is that even possible?

Upload your pictures to shutterfly, photobucket, or something similar and then just post the links.

Looks to me like the hair may be growing a different way in some of the patches. He's adorable!

That's really interesting. I am no color expert by any remote stretch, but I don't think it's possible for a paint to be two colors; otherwise wouldn't we see bay on black, palomino on chestnut, etc? I thought of the brindle horses who have different coat composition in the different colors looking at your pics.

Whatever it is, it's really cool and he is freaking adorable. You look so happy in your pic, congrats!

Go post on the breeders forum. You'll get good input over there.

I've had non-paint horses get marks like that in their coat from fly spray or baths making the hair dry in a different direction, but never to that extent.

It's definitely the color of his hair. He was totally clean with no sweat marks whatsoever.

    SO weird! And wonderful.

The horse we're leasing is a tobiano, and he has areas within his chestnut zone on his neck that are like that...the hair is different somehow, it's the same color basically but has an effect of figured mahogany or something. I thought maybe it was a crazy kind of cowlick.

It does NOT come out when we wash him and brush his coat while wet (which it certainly would, if it were only flyspray marks or such.)

That looks crazy, almost chimeric. I hope someone posts what causes that.

He came from Kansas, so maybe it's a Kansas thing??

I am absolutely no help defining the coloring.
Just wanted to say he is one good-looking guy!

    Did you name him mensch?
And if so, does that have a meaning other than the obvious Yiddish one I know?

I'd want to show him as Rorshach

Mensch is a temporary name that might stick... It really suits him with the Yiddish meaning. He is such a sweet horse.

A Yiddish name for an Irish horse from Kansas? I'm Jewish, so it's kind of cool. And I'll bet there's not a lot of horses out there with Yiddish barn names!

My mare is a paint crossed with God knows what but anyway she has what looks like brocade hair. She is a white with pink skin in some places and then in the dark grey areas, black skin. The darker skin hair sits further up than the pink skin hair giving a brocade look to her. I have noticed a few appy's that also have this brocade look and when I run my hand over her she feels like brocade. Maybe this is the same thing with your horse too.

PS I always wanted to name a horse "Chutzpa" (I think I spelled that right).

I have a chesnut gelding that when we bought him he looked like that, it was hair growing in patches in another direction. Over the course of a few months and a few bathes and a few groomings that pattern disappeared as it started laying in one direction. But it was very weird, yet cool!

I have some pics of it but it's on my home computer and not on photobucket. Although not good pics.
I want a signature but I have nothing original to say except: "STHU and RIDE!!!

Wonderful COTHER's I've met: belleellis, stefffic, snkstacres and janedoe726.
