    Default Email Virus

There seems to be an email virus going around the horse community.

It sends out messages with no subject, containg a link to a web site.

Not all the same web site.

But all the ones I have got have come from horse people.

I got one of those... was from an email address I recognized from the CANTER auction, too.

Wasn't sure if it was a virus or spam or what.

I got one of those too. I deleted the email without clicking on the link. It didn't look like something the "sender" would actually send to me.

I got it too. One came from a friend who died a few months ago. You can imagine my shock when I saw her email address.

I can imagine. Last year I was on msn messenger and my dad logged in. My father died 3 years ago...

I, luckily, have not received one of these yet, but thanks for the heads up.

I received six between late last night and 11`a.m. today. All from horsey contacts and all with links (but not all the same link as Janet mentioned).

Interesting...this happened to my email account yesterday. Apparently it was hacked and sending a link as described.

This also happened to a friend of mine yesterday as well, who is a horse person and also posts on COTH. I wonder if all of the horse people with the virus have something in common, ie on certain mailing lists, shop with a common vendor, etc.

From something one of the "hacked" people said-

Check your "sent mail" file. If you are infected, the bogus emails sent from your email account will (may?) show up in your sent mail.

If they are in your "sent mail" file you are almost certainly infected.

If your "sent mail" file is "clean", you are probably OK. But I don't know enough abut this virus to say you are "definitely" OK if your "sent mail" file is clean.

Time to call the Geek Squad, run virus scans and maybe upgrade the software.

I am not sure what category an email virus fall under.
I think (outdated info) the purpose of hacking email is to SPAM infomercials without using up one's own bandwidth plus maximizing capacity.

(it also helps to have lots of free email accounts for different purposes)

Maybe someone who knows more about this than I do can make something of the fact that, while the links are all different, they all point to files that end in ".php"

I got two last night - both from horsey people I've dealt with before but don't know personally. I had just read this thread yesterday so it's ironic that I got those soon after. Must be going around quickly.

PHP is just the scripting language used to develop the page... this site itself (COTH forums) uses PHP... check out the URL of the page you are viewing right now and you'll see it in there.

That alone really tells you nothing about whether a site is malicious or not... it is what the code does when you access the page that is the issue (or not)
