Default Where to stay near Woodside CA?

The good news...I have been accepted to learner judge at Woodside July 4th weekend!
The bad news, I have to pay for all of my own expenses.

Any tips on hotels that I will not get killed at that wont break the bank for 5 nights? Any good places to eat that are not $$

    Thanks!!!!

Woodside is very charming. Congrats and safe travels. I don't think there's much that is inexpensive around there that you'd actually want to stay at. Maybe go to the BAEN (Bay Area Equestrian Network) site and ask. Lots of houses around there with granny quarters/guest houses that might rent to you for a week.

Creekside Inn in Palo Alto, which is usually one of the show sponsors, has reduced rates listed on expedia right now- $116/night avg for that week. You could also look in Redwood City or San Carlos, but be careful with RC, parts of it can be pretty sketchy.

    Default Stanford

Stanford University is very close. I'd suggest calling the equestrian center there (they have a gorgeous facility) and ask if they have any suggestions.

If it is the one in Redwood City, it is in a bit of a borderline neighborhood at the edge of Atherton and RC., across the street from the "Hanky Panky" strip club and the "Adult Superstore." There is, however, a Target another block up. You should be fine safety-wise, although I don't know anything about the quality of the hotel.

    Default Mountain View

Check out Mountain View just south of Woodside/Palo Alto for less expensive places to stay and generally newer, too, because close to Google headquarters. Great restaurants, many not expensive, also available there, too. But you will need transportation to get there unfortunately.
Also check out the California Street area of Palo Alto which tends to be less expensive and some good restaurants. Closer to the Horse Park in Woodside.
Consider getting a AAA Guide Book for Northern California and you can see whats available in the general vicinity and how its rated.
Welcome to California and Good Luck!

    Default Cheap and close

Stanford University runs a hotel-like thing out of its dorms for summer camps, conferences and whatnot. You might google around in there for something that will be cheap and close.

As to Redwood City's reputation. There's a difference between sketchy and skanky. Redwood City merely does skanky in sections. But they are small and interspersed with the rest of it. I'd feel safe anywhere.

Nothing to add on housing because it looks like you found what you were looking for. But good luck! And downtown Palo Alto is full of dining options - if you want to grab something quick like a sandwich, there is a shopping center in Menlo Park just east on Sand Hill Road - there is a Safeway, a sandwich shop, and a Starbucks. It's in Sharon Heights.

(And if you get the chance, go to the Dutch Goose in Menlo Park and get some deviled eggs... yum)

I second MVP in not being afraid of Redwood City Most of the area around Woodside is pretty nice. I grew up in San Mateo, which is only about 15 minutes from Woodside but probably further than you'll want to drive.

For restaurants, I love yelp.com if you've never "yelped" before. Its a great application for finding good food!
