Anyone know any good vets/surgents that I could send radiographs of a knee injury for second opinions? Well techniqually 3eds and 4 opinion LOL.

I am located in PA.. I also do not want to pay an arm and a leg for opinions. I can send them over email. I guess I could copy them onto a cd and send them too.

I have talked to 3 vets and all 3 had different opinions.. LOL. So I think talking to MORE vets and adding 2 and 2 together is my best bet thanks

I have used Rood and Riddle for this type of thing but, I do use then live in person too so that might be why they were willing, but, try them or Haygard in KY

Being in PA the logical place would be New Bolton. If they are digital your vet can email them to Dr Richardson. He usually gives vet to vet opinions for free.

Ok thanks.. could you get me an email from the first "Rood and Riddle".The radiographs are digital and I have them on CD as well.. Which I am pretty sure I can burn it onto more cds. Thanks..So far I have 3 vets with 3 very different answers so thanks for all the help.

I would look at the three vets' experience - and pick the one with the most leg experience. In CA I had 4 vets I would call on things. One vet had spent 20 years working for a racetrack. He was MY LEG DOCTOR and the advice I followed. So look at the three vets' background.

I would second Dean Richardson or Virginia Equine Imaging....Have heard lots of good things about them

There is a really good veterinary radiology specialist at NC State who my vet, Tim Ober, sends images to on occasion. He is the one who reads the MRIs, but I can't remember his name off the top of my head. That might be something a little different to look into, radiology is ALL this guy does.

Unless you are going to ship the horse to KY or NC for treatment, don't send the xrays there and ask for an opinion. I think that is rude.

I would also consider that, if you have one set of x rays and three very different opinions on them, maybe you need a different set of x rays, not a different vet?

Not rude at all. The top vets give second opinions on x-rays and MRIs from a distance every day.

Actually VEI does consults all the time. I had called them about my horse and I am in NY. They do charge a fee but it was no problem and the were not offended in any way...

Right, you would absolutely pay a fee for the consult, not just expect him to read them for free.

The vets opinions were so drasically different. The vet with the most exsperiance told me the best news of the three. So i would LOVE to go with that. Although the other two vets made me loose some hope. So I would like to get a few more opinions.

I would call the places the other posters suggested and discuss your wanting the xrays read before sending them. the worst the vet would say is no, they won't do it. They can't shoot ya and eat ya!

Kent Allen (VA Equine Imaging) is one of the very best. If I wanted definitive info - I would certainly get his opinion.

I really liked Dr Doyle at Mid Atlantic Equine in Ringoes NJ.
If you can swing it I would consider going there. This way if they see something on the xrays you are right there if you need an ultrasound or other additional diagnostics.
If not give them a call and see if they will consult on the Xrays.
They actually were less expensive than my local vet and had a MUCH higer quality ultrasound machine. The portable ultrasounds apparently are not as good and it is harder to control the ambient light at the home farm.
I would think that the same may be true about digital xrays.
I also know for some diagnostics the vet prefers to do their own unless they know the vet that took the original ones. This way they can be assured that the view was actually taken where they expected it to be taken.
The other option is see whoever took the xrays recommends since he may already have a relationship with a vet at New Bolton, Cornell, R&R or one of the others. This would go back to the 4th opinion vet knowing and trusting the views and workmanship of the original vet.

I'd send them to Virginia Equine Imaging or Rood & Riddle..I did an x-ray consult with Dr. Hopper from R&R last fall and I think it was maybe $100?
