Default Say no to teen pregnancy but flip off horse w/o helmet

So says a commerical I just saw on TV sponsered by a teen pregnancy website showed a teenage girl on a paint horse flipping backward off the saddle on camera for her loving parents.

"I love my life, I don't want a teen pregnancy to ruin it."

Apparently landing on your head and killing yourself doesn't count.

    No not like vaulting

If you're going to advocate safe sex or no sex for teens because it ruins their lives, then perhaps also advocate not ending their lives by landing on their heads doing a stunt.

Am I the only one who was trying to figure out why someone who was having sex, safe or otherwise was giving a horse the finger because it didn't have a helmet on?

    You've got company in me.

Good times! Was it a regional commercial?

Changed title to make sense and removed website because apparently I got it wrong and it led to porn instead.

If the commerical is like you described...good grief.
You know, everybody thinks we found
this broken-down horse and fixed him,
but we didn't. He fixed us. Every one of us.

I noticed that on TV yesterday... it's a girl sitting on her freestanding, admittedly very patient paint horse, and then she basically rolls off him upside-down. Sigh.

I admit that there are young trick riders out there who do far more complicated stuff on moving horses, without helmets, but I still cringe when I see riders without helmets and especially children/teens. I know I rode without a helmet when I was a kid. I know there have been times I've ridden without a helmet even as an adult who should know better... every time, I thought I was safe. Kids think they're infallible; adults think they've got a safe horse... we all know accidents can happen on the safest horse.

Clearly the girl has a good bond with her horse and loves him and trusts him, and it's always a good message for young girls that horses are more reliable than a teenage boy--but I do wish she had a helmet too. Though really when you're already upside-down, the helmet's not going to protect much against a broken neck, so it's probably a moot point...

One of the Gardasil commercials used to have a kid barrel racing helmetless, while they go on about wanting her to be "one less" - so she doesn't get HPV, but TBI is OK?

(Of course, those commercials drive me up a wall every time they come on, but in a not horse related way: it's "one FEWER," people, not "one less!" )

    Ah! I am not alone!

We just finished watching a show on the DVR- Mr. RF was fast forwarding through the commercials and I caught a glimpse of that and yelled "HIT PLAY!".

Do not get. Shows and commercials with bike riding show the riders wearing helmets now... but horses are safer than bikes, I guess?

There is another commercial along the same lines where the young man snow boards down a small hill and jumps over his friend who is laying on the ground.

I think the concept of the commercials is good, but..um....

I read the title several times and that is what I got out of it too.

Oh please, if it gets one kid to stop the Only In America "practice abstinence" useless BS and puts 'em on the pill instead, I'm all for it. Time for people to stop burying their heads in the sand: kids have sex. Use birth control and maybe we won't be in a country with the highest incindence of teen pregnancy in the first world. I thought it was a great commercial.

Gotta agree with this. As long as the teen pregnancy rate is higher than the rate of TBIs from horse falls, I can live with such a commercial. Presumeably, when the parents say "gee, that's a great idea!" and get their daughter riding lessons to keep her out of the back seat (or wherever they do it these days ... ), her instructor will insist on a helmet.

There are worse things for a young lady to have between her legs than a horse.

Ah yes, but Monstrpony that's still where the problem lies - it is not bad for her to be having sex. The minite this whole attitide about It's Bad and Save Yourself and Practice Abstinence goes away, and is replaced with the realization that it's perfectly normal but do be on the pill and use condoms, we'll have a teen pregnancy rate that resembles the Netherlands and not a poor third world nation.

I just saw this commercial last night as well and was a bit confused at first what the hell was going on! But I must say as the soon to be mother of a little girl (yah due in under 1 week!) the thought of her growing up with horses like I did is pretty comforting when we get to the teenage years. Hubby wasn't so hot on the riding idea until I told him it means all the guys she would run into as a teenager would either be gay or castrated. He was pretty okay with the riding after hearing that.

Teen pregnancy in Canada has dropped 36% in the last ten years, and has dropped 21% in the US. Abortion rates have also dropped by a similar amount.

I guess a lot of young girls are flipping off horses instead of getting on boys...

(actually, no, we figure it has to do with education and easy availability of contraception as teen sex rates have not really decreased- although age of loss of virginity, has gone up slightly in the same time. Prudes!)

Cat, it's not a secret that it went down. But it's still unecessarily high. As for the commercial, it did exsactly what it was supposed to do: got people's attention.

(there was a bit of facetiousness--I think that's a word--intended there. I do agree with Coreene; they're gonna do it, make it acceptible to be sensible about it)
