    Default Question about the Preakness...

    The Preakness cocktail that is.

Main ingredient is Blended Scotch Whiskey.

What would be a good choice that is also relatively budget friendly?

Recipe (any other ideas gladly accepted)
    1/2 oz sweet vermouth
1 1/2 oz blended scotch whiskey
    1 dash bitters
    1/2 tsp Benedictine

Stir with ice strain into a cocktail glass.
Add a twist of lemon peel

    Repeat as necessary

And of course what are good snacks to serve whilst watching the Preakness?

Any wisdom that might be offered on this topic would be greatly appreciated!!!

What the heck are you trying to make? Lighter fluid?

    Black-eyed Susan
    3/4 oz vodka
    1 1/4 oz bourbon
3 oz sweet and sour mix
    2 oz orange juice
pour into an ice filled glass in order, stir and garnish with orange slice and a cherry.

Note, these aren't that great either but definitely better than whatever you were talking about making. I can give you my recipe for pomegrante martinis if you want something good!

Just trying to comply with tradition here. You know, like Mint Juleps for the Kentucky Derby.

_______ for the Preakness (there is a Preakness cocktail but perhaps something else is better- though also traditional to the race).

_______ for the Belmont (and of course there is a Belmont cocktail... it is made as follows:
    2 oz gin
    1 tsp Raspberry syrup
    3/4 oz light cream

shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

What laurie posted, the black eyed susan, IS the traditional drink for Preakness. (I happen to like them, but find them deceptively easy to drink, they are pretty powerful!)

That's wrong too. The traditional drink of the Belmont is the Manhattan.
    2 oz rye whiskey
    1/2 oz sweet vermouth
    2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
    maraschino cherry for garnish

You look like you're finding peoples' attempts to do cheap versions, Mukluk. (Also, sweet mixers are for little girls and people who don't actually like alcohol. Rubyfree's right, just get good Scotch.)

    ETA: http://www.bartendersguide.com/recip...kness-cocktail

    This is NAMED the Preakness.

    http://www.bartendersguide.com/recipes/black-eyed-susan

This is the official drink of the Preakness.

    http://www.preakness.com/static/dini...neyardMenu.pdf

    And Son of ETA:

You are both wrong, the official drink of the Belmont is The Belmont Breeze.

    http://www.belmontstakes.com/experie...ontbreeze.aspx

Prior to that it was the White Carnation.

    http://www.drinksmixer.com/drink5003.html

Neither one is especially popular, but if you order the nifty collectible glass the Breeze is what you get. Frankly, both of them sound like crap. (Remember sweet mixers are also great for overcharging people for cheap liquor they can't taste.) Beer is more popular in sales at the race, and most people in the crowd also would prefer the Long Island Iced Tea (vodka gin rum tequila triple sec fill with bar mix splash of cola lemon garnish. That is a very easy drink to learn as a bartender because it's left to right down your speed rack plus your bottom-shelf triple sec. It is DESIGNED to get people to pay more for the cheap liquor, because no one in their right mind would order one with call-brand stuff.)

I thought the official Preakness cocktail was a Beer Bong, followed by some Jaeger shots. Get Your Preak On, y'all!

    Default Forget the Belmont Breeze...

Believe me, there's no one at the Belmont with a juicer producing fresh juice all day. I'm all for changing the "official cocktail" to The Tremendous Machine, which requires a lot of bourbon, but no fresh juice. (All credit to the NY Times for the recipe!)

    The Tremendous Machine

    3 ounces bourbon
    1/2 ounce dry vermouth
    1/2 ounce Grand Marnier
Leaves of 2 sprigs rosemary, lightly crushed
    2 dashes Angostura bitters
    1 whiskey-spiked cherry.

Fill a shaker with ice and add bourbon, vermouth, Grand Marnier, rosemary and Angostura bitters. Shake until well chilled. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with cherry.

From the Preakness website (and in accordance with Laurierace):

Re: traditional snacks? Crab cakes, of course - the "poor man's" ones are good for those of the vegetarian persuasion (or if you just don't want to spend the $$ on good crabmeat)...

Thanks so much everyone. I feel truly enlightened. Will plan to make black eyed susans. Sounds more healthy anyway with the orange juice and all! Thanks a million!!!
