I have a friend who is trying to sell me her 2-year-old Nimmerdor colt. I haven't even seen a picture yet, but thought I would see if anyone can give me some info. He's out of a nice 16.3 hh TB mare. I will geld him and use him as my personal show horse for lower level jumpers, hunters and Dressage...I don't see myself ever going over 4ft. or 3rd-4th Level Dressage, but that said, I only get to have one horse, so I need one that can do it all!

Anyone handled a Nimmerdor baby? How are their temperments? Movement? I know they can jump, but is that consisitent with all crosses, or just the full WBs? Any info/insight you could provide would be great! Thanks!

Check the accurately documented pedigree carefully. Nimmerdor died in April, 2003. It is highly unlikely (although possible) that he has sired a two yr. old colt out of a TB mare in this country.

SHF - Good to know!! Thanks for the info! Although, the person selling is an Equine Reproductive Vet...any chance they had frozen in the tank all that time? Did they ship frozen on Nimmerdor????

How hard would it be for the OP to send in some mane to the KWPN-NA to test in a case like this?
Are colts genetic tested for thier papers? And in this case if the breeder is a vet could she sign her own papers for the breeding cert?

Check with Kathy Hickerson of Majestic Gaits. She is the distributer for VDL frozen (or at least one of them) in the U.S.

Yes, a two year-old would have had to supply DNA for KWPN-NA registration papers.

Is there another Nimmerdor out there? Maybe it's a different stallion? I'm very confused...although she did say that this is probably one of the last Nimmerdor colts, so maybe she did mean "the" Nimmerdor...I just don't know.

I don't see a lot of direct Nimmerdor offspring, usually grand babies and great grand babies. I have ridden one ster Nimmerdor mare, who has all jumping pedigree but is ridden dressage. She is a plain bay with minimal white, has beautiful movement, decent conformation (although her neck is set a little low for my liking, and she doesn't have the most attractive head), is very sensitive, and has great rideability. She is a really nice mare.

I'm not sure if that's common for Nimmerdor offspring, but that's what this mare is like.

Nimmerdor is my daughters mare's grand sire. She is out of Telstar (who is out of Nimmerdor/Nathalie) http://www.horseplaza.com/telstar.htm and a TB named Laura May. She has a lot of energy but she is brave brave brave. They did breed her for eventing but she is not patient enough for the dressage but her sire Telstar did do dressage and show jumping - although I do not think he excelled at dressage either. I know Telstar was a bit hot and my daughters mare is definately on the hot side. I have video of her on my youtube link - Tiz Telley's Girl is her name. We have had since she was 6 and she had about 120 days under saddle and my daughter who is 16 did bring her along to where she is now.

My roommate at college had a direct Nimmerdor gelding (must have been near 20 years old) that I was fortunate enough to ride. He was originally imported as a dressage horse and ended up not enjoying the dressage and was re-sold as a prospect for the higher level jumpers. He ended up being a solid 3'6"-3'9" child/adult jumper and equitation horse. He was very heavy in build but very sensitive and could be hot, but was very rideable and had great gaits and a wonderful personality.

Why don't you just ask the vet if he had frozen and used it to produce this gelding?

Interesting...it sounds like everyone is saying that the Nimmerdor offspring have the movement, but not the mind for dressage, that they make better Hunter/Jumpers than Dressage mounts, and that they can be a little hot....

Thank you so much for all the info! I will be going to see the colt in three weeks (he's about 3 hours away in a tiny little country town). When I go, I'll be able to get info from the breeder and see exactly what the scoop is. I'll let you all know what I find out! :-)

You may also ask the breeder about the mare's temperament and talents while you get information on the sire..... It always takes two to tango.

I agree with siegi b. Go with an open mind. Now that you've gotten a variety of opinions, try and put them aside and focus on what is standing in front of you, and what the mare has produced in the past. Otherwise, you might miss something good.
