I have a friend whose mare foaled this am and early this evening the mare has passed. We are in the Charlestown WV, Winchester, VA area and in desperate need of a nurse mare. Any leads or info would be great.
There is a hormone program that works really well to induce laction in open mares (but you do want to use one that has had at least 1 foal before). It takes about a week to kick in, but if you feed with a bucket/bottle during that time it's amazing how fast they will switch onto a mare. The hormones make hte mare feel "motherly" and they will bond with the foal quiet well.
Call equine vets/clinics and vet schools, breeding farms in your area -- they might know of a mare that lost a foal and can be a surrogate mom. Good luck! Check on the sporthorse board for another thread on this and a post about an igloo system for a nursing orphan. Darlyn of Fairview Farm has it on her website.
