I have come to the realisation that I have not ridden Poco sense, well December. In fact tomorrow would be 4 months to the day that I have NOT ridden Poco. Wow, Poco got like a mini vacation! Going back through my posts, they have mostly been about Red, what Im doing with her, whats going on with her. Poco being mentioned a couple times here and there.
So I decided to ride Poco today, it was going to be her day darn it. Will she Nill she! So I got her and things did not look promising, she kept acting snorty and spooky as I took the shedding blade across her body, eyes wide, flinching every time I moved it, before it dawned on me. Shiney piece of metal, out in bright sunlight with a horse who hates anything that flashes.... Yeeeaaaaa. So I repositioned her, she flinched a couple more times out of habit, then stopped and sighed as the shiny piece of metal of doooom stopped flashing at her. Ok Problem solved.
I finish with that and move onto the tacking process, saddle pad. check, saddle, check, girth.... check, bridled, check. got her all set up, set the camera up and we were off!
Remember how Poco was not ridden for 4 months? Yeeeaaaa, I wasnt very optimistic in that department, she usually gets fairly bad riding wise if I let a week or two slip by, this was 4 friggin months! A horsey vacation!
She loved it, the entire time she just loved it, she was willing, after the initial "we trot now pleeeeaaaasssseeeee!?" she did absolutely wonderful. She gave me no problems, at all, i could do my stretches on her, she would stop, and walk with no issues, would trot off with happy ears. I got a phone call a few minutes in and the rest of the ride was spent with my phone glued to my ear and her WALKING on a loose rein, listening to neck reining and leg cues! I was so excited half my conversation was about how great Poco was behaving and how there must be something wrong with her because this behavior is so out of character for her. I mean it was completely out of character for her I was in shock. I did not try and push it though. I wanted her first ride in 4 months to be easy and relaxed with nothing complicated of her other than walking over the ground pole of horsey hell.
After our ride I loved on her some more and hung around her and snapped some pictures. Then I decide im tired of supporting my weight i shall sit down. Poco perks up, and comes over and sniffs me, then I fall back now and lay on the ground and Poco goes,
"OMG you is hurt!!!!!!!"
"how about now?"
"please get up"
She was starting to get depressed!
She kept nudging my knee and arms, and even lipped and pulled at my shirt a bit. Once I sat back up, she sighed, licked her lips, and looked obviously relieved and gave me pony kisses. Once I got up completely she sniffed me over, sneezed on me, then went back to grazing.
Today was just so lovely, and Poco is such a good caring pony.
Friend of mine used to do this when I was riding her aged tb mare. She'd lie down and the mare would come unglued with worry. Then she'd sit up again and mare would do whatever I asked her. Funny the first time but.....
