Ok guys, this is a new thread for those of you who brought home CANTER cuties from Northampton. I know A LOT of you brought one... or two... or five home. Please post here and let us know how they are settling in. Pics will be MUCH appreciated as well. I would really like to know how many of us bought one. I did not. I have two horses already and can't afford another right now. Post away... I can't wait to see new pics!

I meant to take my camera to the barn today but that darn craft disease struck again and I forgot it. lol I will make a supreme effort o remember it tomorrow and snap a couple of shots of Sahara. The pic on the CANTER site did not do her justice. You can't see her beautiful face in it.
C'mon let's hear from some of the others. I am dying to see how everyone else is faring with their new beauties.

I think this is the third place I have posted this...and more to come I am sure.
Fancy Flare and Sophie (my 17 mo old homebred TB) are fast friends. Sherri said Fancy just about buckled when she shoved her nose in the round bale. She said her legs were shaking and almost buckling she was so happy. Don't get me wrong, she is in good flesh and was well cared for at the track, but I think she is happy for open space and big round bales of hay, and a rotten little TB friend who gives ugly faces only when mommy is around.
Beyond Great just made it home last night at 9 pm. She settled right in and will have a good time playing outside today I am sure.
More to come later this week once there is more to tell!

Well, I wish I had good news to post about Abe, but unfortunately, he's kind of a mess. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_frown.gif

He was sweet as pie walking out of his stall at the track, across the road to our trailer and walked right in on the first try. Rode fine home and came off fine, although the backing off part made him a little nervous. Walked him down the driveway and he was fine. The fun started after he met my group (nuzzles over the fence) who were turned out in the pasture, and then I put him in his stall. He was NOT happy! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_frown.gif

He was calling and pacing for the entire three hours while I got his stall and attached pen ready. He wasn't frantic, he didn't get all sweaty, but I knew the pawing and pacing weren't doing his knee any good. So I finally got his little home ready and put him in there. He flew out into the little pen I constructed from round pen panels and called and called and trembled. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_frown.gif I called the other horses over so they could finally meet him and Ted promptly bit him on the butt. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif Once he discovered that he could get away from the others if they got too aggressive he was fine and calmly ate his hay. *phew* Oh, and BTW, I do have the pony out in an attached pen to keep him company and she's doing her part by staying as FAR away from the screaming demon as she can. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif

So last night I had to put him in a little attached stall because his current house was a run in stall for the others that's attached to the back of the barn and they just walk right in to their stalls from there at night. He pitched a fit. He called, but like that angry stallion squealy kind of call that was pretty unnerving. I finally got everyone in (Fessy was terrified of the screaming demon in the back room! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...s/icon_eek.gif but finally came in) and for some reason he didn't notice everyone walking into their stalls so he ran back out to his pen to call for them all again. I had to call him over by shaking his grain bucket to get him to see that everyone was right there in their stalls looking at him like he was nuts. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif

He apparently slept fine in his stall last night. We didn't hear him call and his stall wasn't all torn up or anything. But he went through the same anguished calling when I put him in the little stall while I let everyone out this morning, but settled right down once he saw that everyone was out with him.

And the worst part is this morning he's REALLY lame on that knee. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_frown.gif

You know, the thing is, he's not dangerous. I can grab his halter when he's pitching a fit and still lead him around without fear of him rearing or pulling away from me, or whacking me with his head. But he's just such a wreck! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_frown.gif The vet is coming out to evaluate the knee tomorrow and bring lots of tranquilizers! http://chronicleforums.com/images/cu...milies/yes.gif

I'm just so worried that he's damaging the knee further, but if I try to put him in an inside stall, he'll just pace even more. Once the group settles down outside, he does too and happily eats his hay.

Thanks for listening guys and I'm sorry this wasn't a sunny update like everyone else is giving you. I'm gonna need your support and handholding through all this. Once he's calm he's just the sweetest, but it breaks my heart to see him get so upset. http://chronicleforums.com/images/cu...milies/cry.gif

Fessy's Mom - I just wanted to reach out and give you a big cyber-hug. I believe it was fate that brought you and Abe together and I do believe you will both make it through this transition period ok. The concept of a run-in and being able to socialize with other horses is probably totally foreign to him - but I'm glad to hear that he calmed down a bit last night.

Please keep us posted, I hope he settles in over the next couple of days.

Fessy's Mom- I feel for you. My OTTB was the same way when I got him. No run in so he kept pacing, lathered up and refusing to eat and trying to jump out the window in his stall and cutting himself up nicely.

I figure it is because they are so sensitive and emotional. He'll settle down and probably be the best buddy you've ever had.

Good luck and keep us posted on how he's doing. He was the first one that caught my eye tho I couldn't afford another horse right now.

More {{{{{ HUGS }}}}} to Fessy's Mom (and now Abe's). I don't have any useful advice. I'm so glad he has you for a new mom though. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif

    Fessy's Mom,

Abe is a PERFECT candidate for Prolixin. This is the exact situation that it was designed for: a 2 - 3 week mild tranquilizer that allows a horse to settle in and adjust.

I often give my OTTB's a 1/2 - 1 cc of it when they first get off the track if they want to run the fence line or they get frantic at the freedom their new life affords them.

Prolixin is the generic name. Fluphenozine is the brand name. It can take a couple of days to take effect so your vet may also give you some ace to fill the interim period so Abe doesn't hurt his knee any further.

I just had to fill everyone in on this. If you go to the CANTER website and look at Govans picture you will see Sahara. The pictures must have gotten switched somehow. I know it is Sahara and when you see my pics of her later you will see it too. Trust me I have been all over this mare. So for those of you who liked Govans from his pic it is actually Sahara's pic and she is home with me. Just thought I would share. Will have pics later.

Thank you all for your kindness and support. http://chronicleforums.com/images/cu...s/sadsmile.gif Although I sat here at my desk with sweaty palms all morning wondering what I was going to find when I went home for lunch, I found him standing in the sun dozing. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif My other three were on the other side of the property where he couldn't see them, but Barbie the pony was hanging out (kindof) near him and that apprarently is enough for him. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif

I HATE it when I overreact. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...s/icon_mad.gif It's just that one OTTB I had started like this and really didn't get much better in the five years I had her - VERY herd bound, and it seemed like the whole scenario was playing out for me again. I am SO not a whiner, but after re-reading my post, I certainly come off that way, and for that I apologize. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_frown.gif

LH - is prolyxin the same as Reserpine? I did use that on the mare I just mentioned and it does work really well. Unfortunately, she would have had to live on it. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif

I'm just hoping this was a minor bump in the road and Aby Baby will be happy in his new home afterall.

And again, I can't say enough for all the support you guys have given me, here and in PT's. http://chronicleforums.com/images/cu...s/sadsmile.gif I'll let you know how the vet check goes tomorrow. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif

Fessy's Mom - your post did not sound in the least be whiney! It just sounded concerned and caring. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif

Glad he was sunbathing when you came home today. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif
