I went back to a "manual" dentist. My vet sells me a bottle of Rompun for the event. I dose mine myself IF they need it. The injections cost me about $12 per horse or less. The floats are $65 each. The vet comes out to dose the boarders horses for the dentist. So it ends up costing them about $110 per horse.

I own 12 horses including my lesson horses and my DD's horses. It was costing me on ave $250 per horse or pony. The vet insisted every horse be tranq'ed half to death(previous vet) Several needed little or nothing - i know them he does not. It was TOO MUCH! Plus the power floats damaged a few of my guys teeth and caused permanent damage and tooth loss. It's manual ONLY here now!

No kidding, it can really rack up the dollars. Had one mare's teeth done a few months ago - power tools, extra sedative, and anti-sedative (whatever it's called)...$235.00. ouch

Last time I had the dentist out he charged me a heck of a lot more for a horse that had few teeth and less a horse with a full set of choppers!

I just wrote the check and was like Wow, ok.

A horse I took in for rehoming needs to have a front lower incisor removed in the near future. We are looking at a few thousand dollars to get that one tooth removed. Without general anesthesia. Floats usually cost about $75, with manual tools.

Road fee for out of area vet, powerfloat and sedation for two horses, bloodwork on one ...$388.

Peace of mind, Priceless. It's my largest annual bill. But it is worth it.

For 3?? Granted 2 little ones but I don't think that's so bad.

Last year, I had the vet float my horse, that's 1 horse, and it cost me $275 for one (with sedation).

This year I used my trainer's horse dentist and it cost me $85.

I like that price a lot better!

I just had my mare done today and it was $200. Ouch!

The worst part is that she was just done in September but she has worn her teeth down unevenly and I'm working with the chiro/vet to get everything straightened back out.

But anything to get my little princess happy and going again. She is so sensitive, and is sure to let us know about every little issue.

I am sure my dental work from last week was more expensive, but I never see that bill - right to insurance!

My breakdown was
$60 farm call
$82 dental exam & float (x3)
$15 per .5cc dorm (x2 little ones, x3 for the big horse)

I think he should have sedated me a little bit before giving me the bill. You know it's going to be big when they offer to BILL you instead of charging you on the spot. Silly me, I said, "Oh, I'll pay it now."

And since he just used Dorm, I didn't even get to clean their sheaths afterwards! I did however, get a wicked close clip job done for our clinic next week.

I had the dentist out yesterday as well.

It is $105 for a float plus $45 for sedation (up to 3 shots).

Of course, my mare was being extra fussy yesterday and just would not let the sedatives work! So we had to do a shot of dormosedan ($25)... *note cant wait for a generic of that!*

Then my baby horse (2.5) had his first floating and had 1 regular wolf tooth extraction and 1 blind wolf tooth extraction. They also popped 2 retained caps and did not charge me for them.

Trip is a total of $175 (they come over 3 hrs away) and split between 5 people is $35.

My dentist/vet team also had 2 students with them who are about to graduate and we allowed them to work on our horses, so that saved me $50.

Total: $347.50 for 2 horses.

Quality of work and knowing my horses teeth are amazing: Priceless.

I figure I pay $150 every 4 weeks to get NB on the fronts and steels behind on my mare. I can certainly pay $150 for her to get her teeth done every 9 months +/-.

Luckily I dont have personal dental costs as I work for a dentist and all of my work and my husbands work is free!

I just paid $150 for a regular float for a horse who's at the trainer's. It was, thankfully, the first time I ever paid that much. I don't doubt it was worth it, but I'm very grateful that my regular vet and dentist don't charge that much

Today's dental bill for one horse and one donkey (included sedation, Banamine, and one sheath cleaning), performed by a vet that only does dentistry = $386. Fortunately, I was already numb from the 6 degree temperature before he handed me the invoice.

What can you do? It needs done.

When Pedro needs his teeth done again, lemme know. I just paid $90 for a float to get Brolio's teeth done, farm call included. Couldn't tell you about sedation, both of mine are fine for vet/farrier/dentist.

Wow. Love my veterinary dentist. Power tools and sedation = $145 per horse. He's on time, does a fantastic job, shows me before and after, encourages me to shove my hand in and feel around, tells me what's going on in there.
