9 year old ADORABLE pony in Louisiana - UPDATE: home found!!!
"Harry Christmas" was seized by the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Dept. on Dec 17th and was taken to the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter. His pasturemate (a Paint gelding, also around 10 years old) starved to death and suffered a miserable fate. The owner was arrested for animal cruelty.
The Parish shelter is not equipped to house or adopt out livestock and horses were either taken to the local sale barn (if they thought they could re-coup the cost of the Coggins test required to take them there) or immediately euthanized. I am on the Board of Directors for PAWS of NE LA, a local animal welfare group. We have been able to step in, foster and fund medical treatment for these horses and get them into rescues or permanent homes.
Harry was fully vaccinated and de-wormed on Dec 22nd. He has a current Coggins test as of that date. The vet aged him at 9 years old. He is approximately 14 hands tall.
I moved him to my farm on Dec. 31st and have been fostering him since. He is a doll to work with and it has been a joy watching him recuperate.
Since we did not know his medical history, we boostered his vaccines on January 14th. His hooves were trimmed on the 15th. He was also de-wormed again on Jan 21st.
I have not ridden him but he does have saddle sore scars on his withers. He has the personality of a well broke pony...leads, loads, clips, ties, cross ties, great for vet & farrier, etc. My cat Angus has a special attachment to Harry and is always rubbing up against his legs or hopping up on his back for a nap. Harry is great with it all and seems to enjoy the company of the cat.
I am sure he could benefit from having his teeth floated. He has not yet had that done. Harry has no trouble eating and he gets Purina Strategy & rice bran twice daily and all the hay and grass he will eat.
He did have some of the worst rain rot I have seen but it is improving. The hair is starting to grow back. He is also starting to look healthy...getting a shine to his coat and loosing the pot belly. He is filling out nicely.
I think Harry would be happy as a riding horse or companion. He is sound (walk/trot/canter in the pasture) and very willing to please.
I will gladly pay his adoption fee if his forever home can be found here on the COTH 'giveaway forum'. I am bringing another horse to the Dallas/Fort Worth area the last weekend of February and could get Harry at least that far.
Send me a PM or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in this sweet survivor. PAWS does have a simple adoption app that would need to be filled out.
I am super grateful! Jen has offered the little guy to us and our adoption application was approved. Now I need to figure out transport from LA to San Antonio TX or DFW to San Antonio TX. Thanks so much Jennifer, we are looking forward to meeting him.
