I just can't believe how far Shelby has come from a tiny baby to a mostly full-grown mare (turning five next week). I decided to take the camera out last weekend and somehow managed to juggle it with the longe line and the whip and snapped a bunch of pictures. What the heck -- some of them turned out pretty good.
How did I longe the horse and take the pictures? I have a third hand.
Seriously, I held the whip and longe line in one hand and camera in the other. I got some pictures of the sand and some other "artsy" shots, and then I just got lucky.
She IS very sweet (nickname is "Sweat Pea") and quiet, although literally she can be quite loud. Every time I've taken her somewhere I have come home with my ears ringing. That girl can winny, and she will repeatedly tell the entire world that she wants to go home NOW!
Oh, and by the way I'm glad you agree she is beautiful. She's not bad for the filly of a pregnant feedlot rescue grade mare.
(FatPalomino, if you gained half a ton, you'd have to go live in the ocean with the dolphins.)
I am primarily a dressage rider, so I plan to do at least lower level stuff with her. Although she's built more like a cow horse, she is a pretty mover and she might just do well. I hope to get her to a schooling show this year.
I also plan to have someone teach her how to jump so that I can do some little stuff with her for fun. Other than that I am hoping she'll be ready to pack Mr. Larkspur or the occasional guest around the trails some day. She's still pretty green to put a novice rider on, but I think in a year or so she'll be really good.
A couple of weeks ago she saw an emu. Fortunately I was just hand walking her and not riding. She lept backwards 10 feet and tried to get away. It's the first time I've ever seen her tremble. But the next day she was willing to walk almost all the way down the road to where the "giant chicken" lives.
Last week on our walk, she lovingly kicked the neighbor's dog because he was rudely running about barking and trying to sniff her butt. She's a sensible girl.
