    Default mane thickness for braiding

I am getting ready for show season and I am determined that my braids are going to look better this year. I am practicing every week and slowly but surely they are getting tighter and more even. We just do a very local H/J circuit so braiding for yourself is certainly the norm. I got a few tips from a pro-braider last year that are really helping me stay consistent. My TB's mane goes every-which-way however. I know the ideal length is around 4 inches or so - my question is: What is the ideal thickness? I could thin, pull or leave as is since he has plenty of mane to work with. If anyone has pics of their horse's mane prior to braiding that might help me see what my goal is. If it is naturally thick is that a problem? Do I HAVE to thin it to get quality braids or is length the most important criteria?
    Thank you for your responses!

If you get the COTH, there was an article in the 1/22 issue about this with very clear instructions. It is written by a very bust hunter braider and gives great advice!
