When an employee at my company was injured last year, I had the task of telling my boss that the medical report indicated he was "completely incapacitated".
My boss then proceeded to tell everyone for days that he was "completely decapitated", which was a shock to the employee, who was recovering nicely at home. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...on_biggrin.gif
And my biggest horse pet peeve, and I think I've mentioned this before, is "Belgium" i.e.
16 hand Belgium for sale.
Really, Belgium is for sale???
It's Belgian, folks. Belgium is a country.

Although it has been a while since high school, my year book still gets me laughing. They did this stupid page on me and riding, with a picture of me cantering my horse (SO CHEESY) anyway, all of these people signed my book:
"Hope you win you next race!!"
"Don't get bucked or reared!!"
http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif It still makes me laugh...

And one of my personal favorites (since I process equestrian memberships) is the people who fill in "m" for male and "g" for girl and then call me upset that their card comes for Big Studly McGee as a mare and Little Flower Princess as a gelding!

Let me just put it that the other half of the year book comments had something to do with that! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif

You know guys, I don't want to be a partypooper here, but I think that - even though it might be annoying to you - you might want to cut people some slack. Were all of you born with extensive vocabularies on everything/sport under the sun? I think not.
MistyBlue - there are a lot (a LOT) of people out there who LOVE horses, but just don't know ANYTHING about them. Making a person who doesn't know the difference between a pony & a foal look like an idiot, is, well - sort of unpleasant.
And as far as "conformation vs. confirmation", well, I have been working with horses for well over 30 years now, & I STILL will post here & sometimes misspell the word. Not because I don't know the difference, but simply a typo.
I will also sometimes use the term "stud colt", although I do know that that is technically incorrect.

I don't think anyone here is laughing at these people to their faces. Why can't they relieve a little tension by being able to laugh about these mistakes?
I thought the "pony/foal" thing was hilarious, and I highly doubt that MistyBlue made the kid feel stupid.
We all do our best to educate the general masses, but sometimes we need to vent a little.
I don't see how that's a problem. It's not like we're picking on one person in particular and complaining about how stupid they are.

Unpleasant? Hmmmm. I'd go with dang funny. I fully expect to be lambasted if I try to say something intelligent about NASCAR, about which I know nothing. There's just nothing funnier than people who overestimate their competence, regardless of the topic. And it happens all the time around horses.
Un-horse-related, but my thing lately is "nonplussed". It means confused, not unimpressed. Lots of people are nonplussed about how to use "nonplussed". And I find it terrifically amusing. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c.../icon_razz.gif

Being green or not having an extensive vocabulary is one thing - not a problem. But when someone who presents themselves as a horsemen to other horsemen and something like "well-conformated" or "sixteen four" comes out of their mouth (not their keyboard)....well...sorry, but that's snarkable. If you don't have an extensive vocabulary you could always say "pretty" or "put together well" or even "built good". But you just look like a bloody fool when trying to act like you know "big words" and you don't have a clue.
Another that drives me absolutely insane (since I'm on a roll) is "Sure Win" bit holder. It's Sure Win not Sure Wind. (And to be extra anal it is actually written Shur Win.)
Of Ponies & Foals..... my completely non-horsie mother makes a very occasional visit to my workplace. We have one baby a year. She came one year, saw the weanling for that year when I showed her around. She came back the next year and when she saw the next year's weanling (previous year's weanling now looking like a grown horse) said "oh I remember her from last year".... pointing to the current weanling. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c.../icon_wink.gif Not annoying, just humorous.

Yes, but these people rarely have malfeance in mind. I think they just misunderestimated the situation. Truly, they are seeking the embetterment of mankind.
Still, I think they should be tried and persecuted. I mean, fool me once, shame on β shame on you. Fool me β you can't get fooled again.

And I think the problem with newbies trying to "pass themselves off as experienced horsefolk" is just human nature.
It's very easy to say things you're unsure of if you're trying to "fit in". Insecurity forces us to say all sorts of stuff in the effort. And believe me, from someone who's been there, done that, you don't have to openly try to make someone feel like an idiot for using the wrong terminology or asking the wrong questions. They know.
To be honest, if someone knows enough to ride safely & keep their horse(s) in good health, I really don't care how they talk about them.

Breezy, I hear you, but I see things just slightly differently. Those who are insecure about the competence or who are trying to find an answer also have the option of either asking the question they are wondering or simply not opening their silly mouths while they are observing and learning (whether through books or live observation). Very few people would make fun of an honest question or request for help.
So you see, if a person picks the most embarassing option, to blurt out their ignorance, it is indeed cause for mirth, and they bought and paid for it. http://chronicleforums.com/images/cu...milies/lol.gif What is funny, the crux of the humour, is that they tried to oversell their competence, rather than assuming the humble role we all had to once. That is always a funny position that they have chosen to put themselves in. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...on_biggrin.gif

We all have pet peeves and I have absolutely no doubt I have habits that make people grind their teeth in frustration. If I saw my habit on a pet peeve thread, I'd probably laugh and say, 'Yep, that's me!'
So, without further comment, I offer two.
Definitely is not definately.

I see where you're coming from Comstock, & agree with a lot of what you say.
I guess my viewpoint comes from having boarded at barns where the largest clientele were kids, & we all know how cruel kids can be - & for some reason, particularly "horsey" kids; I don't know why.
I've seen some poor beginner child or adult subjected to unbelievable unmerited unpleasantness because of what they didn't know - even with asking appropriate questions instead of acting "know-it-all". After awhile, I think they began feigning knowledge just as a defense. It really was sad, & I have had to rescue far more than one such situation. Couldn't bear the mental pain of listening anymore - lol!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif
