I just read on another website the sad news that Wild Eyed and Wicked and another horses called He's Prince Charming have had to be euthanized due to further complications from the attack. My sympathy goes out to the connections of these horses, and I hope whoever did this is caught and punished very soon http://chronicleforums.com/images/cu...milies/cry.gif

Deepest, most heartfelt sympathies to Dena and all at Double D.

I'm crying all over again. What great-hearted horses we have lost this week.

A very sad decision but I wouldn't question it for a moment as all indications were that the suffering couldn't be corrected for either horse.

Not sure where the $8M price tag was suggested on the other thread as the article, quoting an associate, as being far less. Money of course being meaningless at a time like this

Just in case this sad new development might have the fortunate side-effect of making more people feel as if they would like to contribute, the best place to send donations is:

    ASHAF Equine Welfare Fund
c/o Am. Saddlebred Horse Assn. Foundation
    ATTN: Double D Horses
    4093 Iron Works Parkway
    Lexington, Kentucky, 40511

Be sure to put "ATTN: Double D Horses" on the envelope.

Also, be sure to let them know whether you wish your money to go to the reward fund or to the veterinary care fund. Either way - please give. We have got to stop this kind of stuff.

It is so bad when any horse dies, for the usual reasons. Its almost incomprehensibly bad when they die because people get mad at other people. Because from all I've read, this is simply not an accident caused by some sick psycho who just likes to see horses suffer; rather its somebody who wanted to hurt somebody else for some unbelieveably stupid reason.

I hope that they get caught, and that much much later get punished in a more appropriate fashion than the courts will do initially. The shunning should be so complete that they live lonely cheerless lives ever after.

God rest their souls. What a loss to the ASB world as a whole, and such a terrible loss to those cared for and loved them. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_frown.gif

As Coreene says, what a senseless waste of life. We can only hope that the person or persons who did this get what's coming to them, in this life and the next. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...s/icon_mad.gif

It's moments like this when you realize the criminal justice system really fails when it comes to animals. Third degree burglery and first degree criminal mischief? Putting aside any personal feelings I would have about MY animals being attacked like this (not really possib;e - I'm with Merry on this one), I would still think those charges sounded light if someone destroyed $1M of just property...

Indeed! Although I can only assume that due to the heinous circumstances in this case charges will be heaped on from a variety of aspects of the law. There is no doubt this person will not slither out after a mere 45 days in jail and $500 fine.

Terrible. Those poor horses and their owners.http://chronicleforums.com/images/cu...milies/cry.gif

Does anyone know who supports the lobbyists with the strongest anti-animal cruelty agenda? I'd like to support that group (other than PETA).

My heart is breaking for not only the horses but the woners and everyone at that barn. Shockwed to read that the charges don't sound serious enough, and that it wouldn't make a difference if the animal died or not. HOw can that be? I think the perps should be charged with murder, because that's what it is. The person(s) capable of these acts is just as likely to murder a child.

I read somewhere that the authorities were speculating that it (substance injected) could even be cobra venom! But I guess we'll find out when the results come back. It'll probably come back as some ordinairy chemical that you can get anywhere and untraceable. They were smart not to shoot them, would've been much riskier.

Poor horses. we teach them to trus us and to behave and in the end it made easier for their attacker. Hope the rest of them pull through and they catch the miserable scum that did this.

This just stinks. I feel so sorry for the owners--and I'm heartbroken for the poor horses (who probably stood there trustingly while some subhuman monster injected their legs).

What is the difference between 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burglary? And what the heck is "criminal mischief?" I think of "mischief" as kids covering your yard in toilet paper--not someone killing horses!

On the charges that might be brought against the scum who did this, I would think that to deliberately destroy the worth of something so valuable would qualify as grand theft or something along those lines. Wouldn't that be the charge if somebody stolen these horses?

I'm not a criminal law lawyer, though., so I don't know. I do know what you can charge against somebody all comes down to exactly how the crime is defined in the statute (the elements of the offense), so if the elements of grand theft include taking the "property" out of the custody of the owners or caretakers, then it wouldn't qualify. (Forgive me, dear creatures, for having to describe you as property.)

But what would they charge somebody with if that person walked into a museum and destroyed a Picasso or a Rodin? Or took a sledgehammer to somebody's Rolls Royce? It would have to be more than a misdemeanor wouldn't it?

From our perspective, of course, suitable punishment shouldn't depend on how much the horses are worth in money. Every horse is priceless to the person who loffs it. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_frown.gif
