NBC5 Chicago actually did this as their top news story at 6:30 this morning with a live stand-up report from the Top Brass stable in Illinois.
Per their coverage Illinois Vet Charged the horse San Diego is worth $100k, not the half-million cited in the Palm Beach article. Also, the stolen Swedish Warmblood dressage horse named 'Keller' was sold for $15,000.
In addition to freeze branding, there is also freeze marking, which is an encrypted registration number freeze branded onto the horses neck. This number is tracable by brand inspectors at the slaughter houses. More info at http://www.horseweb.com/client/kka/ .
To help in the search for stolen horses, you can join email discussion groups like NetPosseAlert (go to www.netposse.com for details).
I recently started my own discussion group specifically dealing with horse theft in Texas (for more info, please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lostpony). I hope it will encourage a grass root effort and make people more aware of the problem. I also go to auctions and trail rides hoping to see one of the familiar yet missing faces.

Latest news report says that owner Julie Novak of I believe Keller chestnut gelding is coming back to Ill on thrusday. She reports that the horses condition isn't what it was when he was stolen, however she plans on fixing it! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c.../icon_wink.gif
Just another day!!!
I want to be like Barbie because that bitch has everything!
I know Keller and his owner Jolene (not Julie) Novak. It's soo amazing that she's getting Keller back. He is an awesome horse. If anyone went to the IDCTA Awards Banquet this year, Jolene got a lot of first place ribbons for Keller, it's so awesome that he's going back to her!!
