The story from Monday's Palm Beach Post ... to say its bizzare is an understatement! The theft includes the two horses from Illinois as well as the well publicized theft in Wellington of "San Diego".

And to think people thought the Chicago Horse Maffia was gone http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c.../icon_wink.gif (kidding)

NBC5 Chicago actually did this as their top news story at 6:30 this morning with a live stand-up report from the Top Brass stable in Illinois.

Per their coverage Illinois Vet Charged the horse San Diego is worth $100k, not the half-million cited in the Palm Beach article. Also, the stolen Swedish Warmblood dressage horse named 'Keller' was sold for $15,000.

Tooooooo weird! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...s/icon_eek.gif And Neil Shapiro dated herfor 3 years! Aagggh - talk about not knowing someone!

I'm so relieved the owners of all three horses have found them, and I'm sorry for the one person who bought the 3d horse not knowing it was stolen.

Makes me think, "Branding - it's a good thing!"

In addition to freeze branding, there is also freeze marking, which is an encrypted registration number freeze branded onto the horses neck. This number is tracable by brand inspectors at the slaughter houses. More info at http://www.horseweb.com/client/kka/ .

To help in the search for stolen horses, you can join email discussion groups like NetPosseAlert (go to www.netposse.com for details).

I recently started my own discussion group specifically dealing with horse theft in Texas (for more info, please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lostpony). I hope it will encourage a grass root effort and make people more aware of the problem. I also go to auctions and trail rides hoping to see one of the familiar yet missing faces.

Guess the Wellington press just had to goose the price http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif

Have to make it sound pricey.

The owner declared the price, and if the horse is permantly scarred I'm sure there is an insurnace angle.

What a relief for the owners of these horses! I'm sure they thought they would never see their horses again, and thanks to someone paying attention to someones odd behavior they found them!!!

Well, then I guess he had to goose the price in FL since he told the Chicago reporter it was a $100K horse. Guess he increased in value while he was missing....

Ziobethren should maybe put the horse her agent stole from her on that netposse.com, (a national clearinghouse that keeps track of stolen horses) website mentioned! Maybe they could help her? http://chronicleforums.com/images/cu...ilies/sigh.gif

Whew, judging from that picture of her (Cathy Crighton) I sure wouldn't want to meet her in a dark alley!

And who here didn't just roll their eyes, and said "Chicago. Of course she had to be from Chicago..."

Interesting that the video and text version list different amounts for the 2 horses they mentioned, San Diego and Keller.

    Wonder which is correct.

My thoughts too, DMK. 2 words: hard living.

Was it me or on the news clip did the horse's hind leg look seriously blown up? Wonder if that's a remnant of the "care" received while on the lam. Poor thing.

I know Keller and his owner Jolene (not Julie) Novak. It's soo amazing that she's getting Keller back. He is an awesome horse. If anyone went to the IDCTA Awards Banquet this year, Jolene got a lot of first place ribbons for Keller, it's so awesome that he's going back to her!!
