Thanks for posting this. There is also Daphne Goodall's non-fiction book, Flight of the East Prussian Horses, and Vanishing Breed, a novel by Lon LaFlamme.

    Default Ordered them both

While not necessarily just a trakehener fan, Its always interesting to learn what happens to animals in situations like warfare.
I would like to add a book to the list, a favorite of mine...
'And Miles to Go' by Linell Smith. Its the biography of the Arabian Witez II. I read it ages ago, Mentioned it in passing to a friend, and she tracked it down on Amazon and gave to me as a gift.
One interesting thread in this book is how the love of a single horse brought people from varied walks of life together, to save his.
    Good, quick read.

I ordered the book Gwen recommended and finished it this morning.

I'll recommend it to my friends with Trakehners.

The stallion Keith is in the pedigree of the Westphalian, Pablo. Keith is mentioned in the book.

Default Amazon sent me two books!

For some strange reason they sent me two copies of the 'flight across the ice' books.
Do not know why...but they billed me separately for both.
I guess its just Karma for the duplicate Elvis Gospel cd I got by mistake.
Anyway, rather than haggle with them for return credit, If anyone wants the book I will send it to you for my duplicate fee...just 12 USD...

Thanks for reminding me about this book, it was a favorite when I was a kid! There was a copy at our local library and I bet I checked it out 10 times. I think I may have to look for a copy and read it again!

Springlake1, I would love to take the duplicate off your hands, if nobody else has claimed it! I read the Goodall book and would love to read more. Thanks for posting about this. It is amazing to know what our horses can really do when the chips are down.

That history repeats itself in different cultures and nations is fascinating. The Trail of Tears is a sad legacy of our own in the US.

I am going to order the Trakehner book. There is something magical for me in the Trakehners... Sometimes I have to pinch myself that I have a wonderful pinto TrakXArab in my own backyard, almost grown up... another year or so and I'll get to see how he feels!

I have two Trakehner mares. I looked up the horses mentioned in the book and found the following:

Summer by Itaxerxes x Koenigstraum xx X Bukephalos (bred w/frozen in BC)

    Multiple crosses to Pythagoras
Italia (dam line Itaxerxes comes from)
    Tempelhuter
    Hirtensang
    Dampfross
    Fetysx

And Lucy Mae by Messala/Memelruf/Kassiber (bred by Norbert Wallochny)

    Pythagorus
    Dampfross
    Pilger
    Kasette
    Italia
    Totilas

I think the Maas side of my family actually came from that area in the 1800s.

We never paid attention to family history when there were people available to ask. Then it's too late. I think my grandfather boarded a boat in the Baltic Sea with his parents and many siblings to come to Ellis Island.
