Default A part of me is gone.

My heart is completely shattered. On Dec 29th I had to put down my lovely Bernese Mountain Dog Jagger. He would have been 10 years old if he made it to his birthday in Feb. The hole I feel right now is so unbeleivably huge, even though we still have his brother with us (younger by 7 years). There's a poem I have that has given me some comfort (not much), but the ache is almost unbearable.

If it should be I grow frail and weak,
And pain prevents me peaceful sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
When this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
    Selfishness might stay your hand,
But on this day more than the rest,
Your love and friendship take the test.

We've had so many happy years,
That what's to come can hold no fears.
You'll not want me to suffer so,
When the time comes, let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
Only stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time, you too will see,
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,

From pain and suffering, I've been saved.

Do not grieve it should be you,
Who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years...
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

When I went home for Christmas I found some pics on my mom's camera of me and my lab that I lost a couple of years ago. I have been blessed with many wonderful dogs in my life, but Dolan was the greatest. Finding those pictures reopened the holes in my heart that he left.

Very sorry to hear of your tragic loss.

I hope in time you can turn your back on these shadows and face the sun and remember the joy he brought.

What a handsome boy he was. Such kind eyes. I am very sorry for your loss. We lost our Kuvasz at the age of 14 or 15 about a year ago and I hope it is some comfort to know that the pain slowly eases up and will mellow into memories that make you smile. It just takes time. I hope your other dog is handling the loss ok, poor thing.

I am so sorry for your loss. I put my cat Smokey to sleep two weeks ago and it was really tough. I actually dreamt about him last night; it was a happy dream.

I'm so sorry for your loss... The Berners are just the sweetest dogs; ours is sitting at my feet pathetically looking at me for a piece of turkey. I hope you find solace in your dog's brother and the memories you have of a wonderful decade with him.
