Default Why do CC saddles have a square cantle?

The title says it all. I was talking about different saddle types with someone who doesn't know anything about english saddles today and she asked why all my dressage saddles had rounded cantles whereas my CC saddles have square ones. I honestly didn't know. I know the reason for all the other differences, but never thought about that one. Is it just a style thing, or is there a functional reason for it?

Square allows a flatter seat, round a deeper one.

...And if you notice, more CC saddles, as of late, have cantles that are more of a rounded square, as rider's preferences have shifted to deeper seats.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

I haven't been paying attention to more recent saddle trends as I mostly do dressage, just dabble in hunters since I grew up doing it and definitely enjoy it still. I did just look at some and you're right Tha Ridge, they do. That's interesting.

seat depth. i notice that a lot of the stubbens in the barn have very rounded cantles, and also very deep seats. our pancake saddles have very square cantles. there is, of course, a happy medium, with sort-of-rounded ones.

Thanks, I never knew that. My ancient Stubben has a deep seat and a rounded cantle, my flat CWD has square.
