Canadian Equine Charities
Hey everyone
Got thinking about this the other day. I know all about the wonderful charities that are on the forum ( Sunkissed, Canter, Special Horses etc) and dearly love them all but there must be some equivalent ones in Canada that i could support.
Also wondering if there is a Canter equivalent in Canada?
So anyone know of any that are in Canada??

Cannington Rescue usually joins in on Secret Santa. However, Maureen has been quite ill this year and so bowed out for now. She has been the only Canadian rescue that consistently joined in...but I am sure there must be others. Rider In Training might be able to direct you to a few?

Well, really I don't have much more to add-
you can look at this thread on EMG: http://www.equiman.com/forums/ubbthr...004#Post225004
It's now on the third page- I don't know much about any of them, other than Cannington and the Donkey Sanctuary.
This is the advantage about the resuces signed up with DGRH- they are "regulars" on this board so it feels like we know them.

The ones associated with Special Horses can opt in/opt out of any fundraiser (i.e., if they have too many other things going on, even though we try to minimize what any group has to do). All we require is that (1) they are 501(c)3 or equivalent, as per COTH Admin directives, (2) they are a visible presence on the COTH board - the reason for this is twofold - so that you see exactly where your donations are going, and so that they are responsive to the community, and (3) they are timely about sending out receipts and thank yous - we want our wonderful donors to know their generosity is so appreciated!

I just have to add, PLEASE if you’re planning on donating to a rescue DO YOUR RESEARCH. I’ve seen more than one rescue recommended here that has less than stellar history and that might even be the subject of ongoing SPCA investigations for neglect, cruelty, etc.

GoodyTwo, you bring up an excellent point. That is why we want our groups to be transparent and visible, because the less than stellar ones hurt the causes of legitimate ones.

I totally agree and I see one listed here that has been the subject of much much talk. They don't participate here, but I have seen horses that had been with them for a while, neglected, and had not seen a vet. Plus, the rescue REFUSED to go after the former owner. In Canada, apart from LongRun, The Standardbred Adoption Agency and the Sanctuary, I am not 100% sure any other holds the same charity status than in the US.
Save A Draft has just announced they closed their doors, no explanation given (???).

Yup definitly understand why its so nice to have the rescue participating on the forum. You get to know them and the horses. Makes people a lot more willing to donate if they know where the money is going too.
New stride and long run both look nice.
Will have to see if there are any in alberta...
Not sure if we could do this but which rescue is the one that is iffy??

We sure can, as long as they abide by the rules:
(1) They must be 501(c)3 or equivalent.
(2) They must be a visible presence on COTH.
(3) They must be responsive to their donor base.
