Lightbulb What is the best resource for........

I am looking for the best resource to use for tracking down the history of a now off the track TB. I have what I believe is his name, but his tattoo is very difficult to read. His history is a bit spotty so we do not have a direct line back to the original owner or breeder as we plucked him out of a horse trader's field. We do have a good idea of his age as well.

In your expert opinions, what are the best options out there?

Thanks is advance for any help that you can provide!

The name is either Dawn till Dusk or Dusk till Dawn. We were told that he was around 12 years old. He is a 16.2hh chestnut with a big blaze and some white on his front left cornet and hind left (below fetlock).

If you can access this facebook link, you should be able to see some pictures of him under saddle.

    Thanks!!!!

There is a chestnut "Dusk To Dawn" foaled in 1997 (age 12) by Affirmed (Triple Crown winner and a personal favorite of mine) out of Dawn On by the Minstrel.
Looking at the pics (very cute) I'd guess that this could be him. The Minstrel was a flashy marked chestnut son of Northern Dancer and he put alot of white on his babies. Affirmed was one of the handsomest horses ever. Conformation experts think he rivals Buckpasser for the "most perfect" TB title.

Dusk to Dawn races 17 times with one win and $27,300 in earnings.

There is also a Dusk Till Dawn born in 2000 (age 9) by Unreal Currency x Trafidia by Trapp Mountain.

Dawn Till Dusk are all mares.

    There's a 2000 Dusk Till Dawn that's a chestnut. Canadian-bred.

    http://www.equineline.com/Free-5X-Pe...ts_indicator=Y

The 1997 and 1998 models with the same name are all bays and from Japan, Australia and South African respectively.

If you can decipher at least 2 numbers from his tattoo and give a full description of his markings it should be possible to match him up.

Linny was posting at same time- the name she pulled is more likely if you're sure on the age.

Linny and Cammie, you all are fantastic!!

I will look again tomorrow when I am at the barn, and do my best on guessing the tattoo so we can possibly make a positive ID. I'll follow up with the additional info tomorrow evening.

I don't think I can thank you all enough!

Pretty darn nice breeding if that is him.

I am looking forward to researching further once we *hopefully* find out tomorrow!

He is a great guy with a level head, and he is rather easy on the eyes to boot We just need to keep packing on the groceries to give him a little bulk and we are good to go!

What an exciting lineage if it is the right one!

    Psst...I think you mean 1997 model! I don't think that pedigree's possible for a 2007, actually.

And 1997, chestnut, name sounds right...OP, can you read the first letter at least on the tattoo? That would tell you if the year's right.

    1997 Dusk To Dawn,Ch,c,Affirmed 3 17 1 2 1 27,300 ( 80) 0.66
    North America Turf Record 3 0 0 0 160 ( 74)
    North America Dirt Sprints 3 0 0 0 750 ( 76)
    North America Dirt Routes 11 1 2 1 26,390 ( 80)
    North America Muddy/Sloppy 3 1 0 0 15,380 ( 80)
    DP = 9-2-13-0-0 DI = 2.69 CD = 0.83 AWD = 8.50

See Racing 101 thread for how to interpret. In a nutshell, he ran 17 times with 1 win, 2 seconds, 1 third, earning 27,300 with a highest speed rating of 80. SSI was 0.66, avg for all horses for that year was 1.0. Ran 3x on turf earning $160, 3x short on dirt, 11x on dirt going a mile or further. His win was at 1 mile and a 1/16th.

Very nicely bred, bit of an underachiever for his breeding. I will PM you the same info for all the foals out of the mare.

This free Equibase lookup is my new favorite. You can read through all his charts there.

He was not raced as a 2 year old and lightly raced at 3 - that is sure nice!

Alright, we have moderate success on the tattoo... moderate.

I am unable to read the letter(s) but it looks like the numbers are either 1881 or 1221... Is there any way to confirm with just this info?

You're missing a number. If you can narrow it down to the number locations that you're sure of we can do a process of elimination to find the right tattoo.
The tattoo should be A?????. Can you tell for sure with the 1881 or 1221 where two of those numbers are? A??8?1 for example?

Also, I can't see the Facebook photo- I know he's chestnut, but what are his white markings? Face- star or snip or both? White on the legs? A detailed description would be very helpful in eliminating candidates.

He is a chestnut with a big blaze and white on his left front cornet and left rear but only from his fetlock down. No other white. I hope this helps helps!!

Looks like a wide white blaze and some white on a front ankle. (Working from memory and FB is acting up for me tonight, I can't get on.) The Minstrel but alot of color on his babies but Affirmed was not known for throwing color. Good disposition is an Affirmed characteristic.

Nothing comes up in the combos I've tried. If its possible, take some photos of his lip. Dry it off first, and turn the flash off on the camera to reduce the glare. A black light can help as well, if you happen to have one. If you can get some clear shots, photo software can be used to reverse the images and adjust the contrast to get a better look at what's there.
