    Default bit size

so i have to run out later today before the barn to pick up a bit for the horse i've been riding... dumb me did not get a chance to measure his current one, so i pose this general question.

    do i go with 5" or 5.5"?

i know 5" is pretty much the 'average' bit size, but this dude has kind of a big-ish head. he's a TB, probably around 16.1ish, kinda chunky with more of a WB type head, but he isn't totally moose-headed. is it better to err on the side of a little larger?

thanks, i know this question is a little silly!

what kind of bit are you buying? Loose rings tend to run a quarter size smaller than average (not in measurement, but what you need, so if you take a 5 in a D you need a 5 1/4 or 5.5)

Full cheek can be tight on the corners of the mouth if it's too narrow.

Assuming your local store has the full cheek in the mouthpiece you want in stock-something rare at mine-I'd go with the 5.5 unless they have a 5.25.

If you are outlandishly lucky with what the store has in stock (and it is snowing in Cancun), try both the 5.5 and 5.25 on him for the best fit. The 5 is going to be a little snug in a full cheek on most TBs, especially one not having a dainty head.
When opportunity knocks it's wearing overalls and looks like work.

The horse world. Two people. Three opinions.
