I feed flax (4 oz) for the Omega 3s.
Rice bran is only 20% fat and is high in starch. It's also about 4x more expensive than vegetable oil.
I don't know all that much about soybean, but it can't be that high in fat.
Do you want to feed a fat supplement for weight gain?

Well, flax doesn't really count as a *fat* supplement, since you're very limited in the amount you can feed - 1 cup or so. So while it may contain nice amounts of Omega 3 fatty acid, it's not a "fat" supplement like I think you're intending.
Boss and rice bran and soybean meal provide much more in the way of fat, and calories, than does rice bran.
Nice breakdown Xan That looks about right - boss is 2500 cal/lb, but I think rice bran is more like 1200/lb.

Because some horses object to the texture of oil in their feed. Some horses don't like the taste of oil, and rice bran is very palatable. Some owners object to feeding oil because they find it messy (I don't share that sentiment--my answer to that is "stop pouring it and get a pump"). Some horses already get 2 cups of oil a day, and that is the maximum amount of oil that a horse can digest daily.
Performance Pak, sold at the Co-op place by Centennial. Same thing as Cool Calories, made by the same people, but packaged in a 50 lb bag for cattle people. And a hell of a lot cheaper than Cool Calories, when you work out the dollars per pound.
I was feeding rice bran to Douche Bag for many months. I ran out a month ago and decided not to buy any more. Lo and behold, his psychotic episodes have all but disappeared.
He's now getting a cup of ground flax again (I buy whole and grind), for extra calories, hooves, omega 3s, and his gut -- flax has lots of mucilage so helps soothe intestines and may even clear sand. The others will also get some flax in the winter when the grass is dead, for omega 3s.
