Two weeks ago my horse had to go down to the equine hospital for a few days since he had a huge impaction. He's doing much better, but today I noticed that his skin (including the hair on it) is starting to break off in large pieces (maybe 1 inch by .5 inch) on various parts of his body. The skin underneath is smooth and only has a little hair.
I'm thinking he probably had his immune system compromised, but what the heck is going on? He's always had a good coat before, so I don't know what to make of it. Since I don't know what's wrong, I'm not sure how to go about treating it either.
When my boarders horse had to go to the hospital due to a sand colic, he was heavily oiled. I noticed the areas where the oil got on his coat caused the skin/hair to peel off, like a hide, and the skin under it was nice and soft with a thin coat of new hair.
