I am 5' and an three sixteenths of an inch give or take. My horses range from 7 hh to 17.2 hh. The ones I ride are between 10.2 and 17.2. I don't care how tall they are, but as I get older and creakier with a distinct abhorrence of hitting the ground, I definitely prefer the slab sided variety.
5'4" on a good day and my current horse is 15.3. My retired guy who my Mom trail rides is 17.1, Mom is 5'10". BF also rides him and he's 6'. Both Mom and BF are able to ride my current show horse because he takes up their legs pretty well but they do look a little goofy.
Working horses are 15.2, 15.3, 15.2, 16 hands; one of the 15.2's is a 4 yr old I think will nudge up to 15.3 like her mama.
My filly is 3 months old tomorrow, out of the older 15.2 hand mare, and stands a VERY tall 12.2 and a little change. Yikes! We figure at least 17 hands, as she is all legs with a very long and elegant head.
Past horses were 15.1, 16.1, 15.3, 17.1, and 15 hands.
My favorite size is typically 15.2-16.2, but I've had good matches above and below that range.
I'm 5'7" and my horse is barely 16.1, but I look a tad big on him because he's so compact. I look perfect on a Thoroughbred that's narrow, 16.3, with a long neck and back. I also look normal on large, stocky ponies because they can take my long legs, but I don't have a long torso.
My horse is 15.2 1/2 hh but I've owned horses/ponies ranging from 12.1 hh to 16.2 hh and have ridden horses up to 19 hh!!! Believe it or not!! Even though I look like a flea on the big warmbloods I don't feel uncomfortable on them 95% of the time.
