Ok, bear with me as I ask what's hopefully a simple question.
My horse is on hydroxyzine twice a day for allergy/laminitis issues. I know that it's a banned substance, but I'm trying to figure out what the withdrawal period is.
I called the USEF number this morning and got an unclear answer. First she said that I cannot give him hydroxy within 24 hours of competition (no problem, I think he'll live). Then she said that if he's received it within 7 days of competition that she recommends me filling out a Equine Drugs and Medications Report Form when I get to the show. But that I can still compete without problems.
So say I'm competing on a Sunday. Can I give him hydroxy Friday night as his last dose? And then fill out a Report Form when I get to the show?
I went online to the rulebook and found the following info:
1a. The medication must be therapeutic and necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of an existing illness or injury [CHECK]
1b. The horse must be withdrawn from competition for a period of not less than 24 hours after the medication is administered [HUH??]
1h. Statement signed by person administering medication [ME??]
Does anyone have a copy of this Report Form? I can't find it online.
Meaning if it's necessary to use it at the show, the horse can't show for 24 hours after it's given.
Friday night to Sunday morning is more than 24 hours so you'd be okay... But if you're competing on Saturday morning, you'll want to give the last dose EARLY on Friday (before you'll start showing the next day) or on Thursday night.
Best bet is to get the prescribing vet to sign the form.... CYA is always the best idea.
