Default What are your stall floor layers?

Moving to a new bank barn that must have once been used for smaller critters (lambs or something). Has concrete stall floors but lots of room to build upwards with layers; anyone have suggestions to pad the crud out of these floors?
I'm planning on using it more or less like a run-in and bedding down deeeeeeeeep when weather gets ugly and the boy has to stay in.
Otherwise, for normal in-and-out stall use, I was thinking of laying a layer of some sort of dirt, matting and bedding.
How much to mask the concrete's stiffness?
    Dirt/"fill" suggestions?

Spell-checked prior to transmission. All errors occured en route.

large rubber mats with shavings/straw or some other sort of bedding is your best bet
