    Default Hoof Packing vs. Poultice

Are Hoof Packing (such as Magic Cushion) and poultice the same thing? I have had farriers tell me not to use poultice too much because it makes the hoof too soft. Is this the same for hoof packing? I have realized that many horses get their feet packed at night during the show week. What is your favorite thing to use?

No they aren't the same thing. I chose one or none based upon what I am hoping to achieve. I would use poultice, or as we call it on the track, mud if I wanted to draw out some heat. I LOVE magic cushion for tenderness. I have a huge tub of black goo that I am drawing a blank on the name of right now but that is great for adding moisture to a dry hoof.

The black, gooey pine-tar based stuff is great for taking the sting out after a day on really hard ground. I don't use poultice on feet--or anywhere else, for that matter.

Yeah that's it thanks! I can never remember if its that or Fiebling's. I have had the same container for about 7 years now.

We use Forshner's daily and Magic Cushion for the arthritic ones. We always pack before we load coming home from a show!

Love me some good hoof pack!

A poultice is something soft and wet put externally and commonly used to draw out inflammation.

Hoof packing is a pad to protect tenderness so say like pad in your shoe to stop your feet hurting if you have a blister.
