    Question Weird smelling urine

A mare at the barn where I work has unusual smelling pee. Her stall smells completely different than the rest of the horses in the barn, even though she gets the same food, turnout, water, and has been at the barn for around 5 months.
Is this something to worry about? Or is it that she just smells different?
The smell is almost nauseatingly strong and just gross.

Is there any way to make it go away??
Friend: Can you PLEASE stop talking about horses???!

Me: I'm sorry, there is just nothing else I CAN talk about!

    Default funny smell

My neighbors horses had pee that smelled like that when she started feeding methionine as a supplement.

Any chance she's on any sort of medication? My mare was on SMZs following an injury and -- to make matters worse -- had to be confined to a specially-constructed 8x8 stall. I thought I was GOING. TO. DIE. picking her stall! It became significantly better once she was off the SMZs.

I have also noticed strong urine smell from a couple of mares when they are in heat but I don't know if that's the urine itself smelling different, or the fact that they pee all the heck over the place including down the walls and their legs!

MSM can also cause funky odors as do garlic and some conventional foods

    bladder infections can to.

Metabolic disorders can sometimes impart odors to the urine, however these would likely cause noticable symptoms in the mare

We have one gelding here that is like that. His stall smells like something died in it in the morning! This horse does not drink well, and I think his urine is more concentrated?

I recall my mare would urinate with blob of tan colored "goop" at the end of the urine gusher. She is a salt a holic. I don't know it cleared up. Either I switched to a white salt block (from trace mineral), or to grass/alfalfa mix hay (from straight alfalfa) Or took away the salt for a while.

She is normal now. Something was irritating her insides?

    Default thanks

No, She's not on any supplements or meds. hmm I guess she may react to the food differently than the other horses. Weird.

    Thanks!
