Default Dry horse elbows, how do you get rid of them?

My mare has gotten really dry elbows and I've tried several things to help them but nothing seems to really be working. Today I went out and most of the hair by her right elbow was gone. It reminded me of a hairless dog. Yuck.

I've been bathing her with micro tek shampoo and I've tried putting on tri care, Vaseline and gal salve (different days for each) but nothing seems to be helping.

    Anyone have any solutions?

My horse has a crusty elbow too. Nothing helps.

I mentioned it on the neck threadworm/onchocerca thread and someone told me that crusty elbows were a sign of ntws. I haven't treated him for them with dewormer yet, I was still experimenting with different topicals. But, I'm out of ideas and might give the double dose protocol a go...

    Maybe try Corona?

I would think something thick & creamy would work best??

I use Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo on mine and curry the skin lightly to get all the flakes out.

If it's not ntw's, you could try MTG or coconut oil.

Sheesh, according to COTH every horse in the WORLD has those neck threadworms.

I don't think I'd be shampooing it so much, let the body's natural oils do their job! Apply Corona daily, slather it on thick. That always works wonderfully for my mare's occasional dry skin spots.

Treat with a betadine scrub a few times a week and watch it disappear.

    Hoofmaker.

Mine gets dry elbows just like a human when he is lying down during the nice weather when he's out 14/7. Hoofmaker is a fine, spa-quality lotion for his sissy skin.
