Default Pommel Pads... what are they for?

    These things:

Obviously they're to stop rubbing in the pommel area, but it seems that if you need one the saddle doesn't fit. Anyone have any insight? Thanks!

It's use to raise the saddle and protect the withers.

You are right in that if you need one, most likely there are fit issues. I know they are frowned upon by fitters and fit books.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! There are tons of these things around because saddles don't fit. Pommel pads, banjo pads, bump pads...all due to saddles not fitting the horse.

Some saddles fit almost no horses as they come "off the rack". Hermes were notorious for needing all sorts of additional pads, Pariani's tended toward this problem too!

Ultimately, they don't work and aren't kind to the poor horse...but if you've only got one saddle you spent a ton of money on, and two horses with different back shapes/needs...some people will say "screw the horse" and will pad their saddles up pretending it's OK.
