"Teddy" -- 19 yr old, bay TB gelding, 16.1 hh for free lease within 100 miles of Middleburg, VA.
When in regular work, he is very quiet in the ring, W-T-C on a loose rein with a happy mouth snaffle. He is a good jumper on plain fences, but he doesn't particularly like flowers/brush and what-not. I have used him occasionally to give beginner sidesaddle lessons, and kids have ridden him. He will spook occasionally as a resistance, but that's all it is. If you make him go forward, he says, "Oh, OK, I guess we have to work." The more you ride him, the less it occurs.
We have used him primarily as a hunt horse for the past 10 years (although he is a man's hunt horse--totally different way of going from in the ring), so he is very good on trails, and has no problem with water, bridges, etc, and will lead. He does need a pelham if one wants to go cantering x-country. He needs no maintenance, is an easy keeper (just needs senior feed and good quality hay), must have shoes (he has very good feet w/shoes, but they can get crumbly if he is on hard ground without them), gets along with mares/geldings. He likes to be inside during the summer, but it OK outside 24/7 as long as there is a run-in. Good for the farrier/vet, loads, etc. He has had all his spring shots, a current coggins, and was re-shod on June 1.
He is NOT a show horse, but would be a great beginner-type lesson horse, or a riding horse for an adult. I do not want him going to a fox-hunting home, as at his age he looses a lot of weight after hunting and it is just hard on him.
