SmartCalm ultra from Smartpack is amazing, loved it, had great results and is much cheaper!

It is great stuff, but I'm not sure it's suitable for horses who compete in some organizations that have substance restrictions.

Some use Quiessence for IR management, rather than temperament issues so SmartCalm isn't necessarily a comparable supplement in this case.

I was feeding it to one cresty pony for well over a year w/o any discernible results. I changed hay types and workload and now that same pony looks/feels great and I saved some $$.

I would guess about a rounded teaspoon. I use the same scoop that came with a smaller package of Magnesium.

I am having great results with my guys with one scoop of MagRestore. I did the loading dose for a week, then backed down to one scoop for maintenance. I have tried Quiessence and MagOX before, and did not get the results I am currently getting with the MagRestore.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I want to start my mare on magnesium because I suspect her symptoms of irritability are more than her ulcer issues. [ulcers have been treated and the irritable/anxious/jumpy mare remains and she never used to have those traits].

I would like to order the MagOx from the local feed store as that seems the cheapest way to go. Do I just ask for food-grade magnesium oxide?

Will 50 lbs go bad before I can feed it?

Do I do a loading dose, and if so, how much and for how long?

Answered my first question already - my feed store can get it ordered for me. About $20 for a 50 lb bag.

Mag-Ox (though you can also get this elsewhere)

and GTF Chromium.

Offhand, I don't know the daily dosage for an average size horse (if you want to use the dosage suggested by Quiessence, just google the product and read the label/description), but when you get this determined, there is the general rule of thumb I have read for measuring MagOx:

1/2 teaspoon of magnesium oxide will weigh approximately 2.8 grams and will provide approximately 1.5grams of magnesium.

1 teaspoon mag ox weighs aprox 5.8 grams and provides approx 3.2grams of magnesium.

1 Tablespoon can weigh from (avg) 15.3 grams to 16.5 grams and provide from 8.6 to 9.2grams of magnesium.

Using these numbers: 1oz= 28g
Mag Ox is 56% Mg, thus 28g of Mag Ox supplies 28g X 0.56= 15.68g of Mg.

And according to another poster who weighed it, 1 oz is approximately 2 tbsp, that means that 2 tbsp of MagOx will provide 15,680 milligram of Magnesium. Correct?

So if i wanted to feed 10,000 milligrams (which is what a lot of supplements are), I woudl feed slightly less than 2 tablespoons?

According to the Quiessence ingredients, a serving is 7000 mg of Magnesium Oxide.

I give the human Chromium Picolinate to my insulin resistant pony. 8 pills. I also give her 2 magnesium tablets.

I don't know how it compares in price, she won't eat Quiessence.
