Default What the heck is "role play"?

I have a horse for sale on Dreamhorse, and I got an email asking for permission to use her photo in a role play game?? Now I know MY version of role play , what is this person talking about?

Hahaha, it's probably one of those sites where people can set up their own virtual stables. You can "train" horses and "compete" them and such, but you have to have permission to use any photos of "your" horses = ) I used to give lessons to some younger riders that like to do this sort of thing in their free time. Cheaper than actually having a stable, so it makes the parents happy, haha.

I am thinking it's probably a virtual site where people create their own stables & have their horses & post pictures of them. At least she asked for permission. I have heard some people just take & post.

Blargh. Bad memories for Ms Onyx!!!!

I once had a long conversation on a chat with someone about tall riding boots... thought it was a kid in lessons.
He later admitted he was an adult man who was into kink and had a boot fetish... .... and more "..." yeah there was a bit more but it's too awful to recall.

    ARGH bleck bleck bleck bllleeeaaahhhhhh

And I will qualify that by saying I am in no way shape or form against kink or anything, just be fruitbattin' HONEST with me up front.

I would guess LARP or SCA.

I'd guess the online horsey games. I've known a few kids who have done them, too, and yeah, they take pictures of real horses to add to their pretend stables. I've gotten a few requests like that when selling horses as well. I went to a couple of SCA events in the past and I can't imagine what they'd want it for, but I don't know anything about LARP.

Oh, I read too fast. Didn't realize they were just asking to use the picture.

I used to board at a barn that would host SCA a couple times a year. They would joust!

There is a whole world of online SIM games. They've been around for as long as the internet. I bumped into my first "SIM Stable" website back in 1997 and was totally befuddled by it.

They're KIND of like Fantasy Football, but not quite. Although there is Fantasy horse racing.

Basically, you have pretend horses. Or chickens, or cats, or dogs, or sheep, or cows... you get the idea. Players like to use pictures of real horses to represent the pretend horses. Sometimes they make websites for their pretend stables.

The games vary wildly in type and scope. Some are free. Most are free to start, providing you with a very limited game, and then you either upgrade to a paid membership or it's a pay-as-you-go model.

The more sophisticated ones tend to have a large number of adult players. The better games are actually fairly sophisticated in terms of design, and have hundreds if not thousands of paying players.

Role play is just a type of game in which you develop an identity and play using that identity rather than your own. Kind of like posting on BBs, only nobody yells at you when they find out you're faking it

I'd assume that this is some type of role play in which they pose as breeders.

It's a bit different than a sim game, as "sim" implies that there's some sort of rule-based simulation (think Howrse) while role-play is usually more open-ended, although there are usually rules involved.

I have a friend (no, really a friend, not a "friend") who is really into them, does the whole convention deal, spends entire weekends involved in them, etc. I've done MMORPGs (online computer games) but really I just like killing things with swords.

If you are comfortable giving your permission you should ask for a copy of the finished pic when they are done. What some of these kids can do with a photo and a computer is absolutely amazing. They make better add copy than most paid professionals. BTW thats what they want the pic for (usually) to make a cool or pretty pic for the sim horse. Yes I used to play.

Definitely wouldn't be SCA, that's reenacting rather than computer role-playing... though a lot of SCA nerds do the computer role-playing games too. I can say nerd because I'm a second-generation SCAdian. Only do the equestrian stuff myself now though. (:

I agree that it's a "fantasy stable" kind of thing... you create your dream stable, name it, create your horses, etc. Most of them let you post a picture of the horse on their pedigree page so all the horse-crazy girls who don't have a real horse will surf Dreamhorse and such to find a picture to match their description. I agree, just be happy they asked permission!

I used to do a fantasy stable kind of game when I was a horseless kid... but that was before the high-tech world of websites and so on. We just did it through Prodigy and early AOL e-mail. (:
